After my first real wheelin trip after the cleanup I discovered just how weak jeep rocker panels are.:haha::haha: I'm going to try and build my own armor. Kind of like these http://www.bc4x4.com/pv/yj/rockers/default.cfm Please forgive the basic questions I'm a noob.

I'm thinking of using angle. Does it come 6"x6" or 4"x6"? I'd like to go up 6".

Aluminum or steel? What kind of steel? How thick for either?

I'm thinking 1/8th or 3/16th.

Rig:
Stock 95 jeep YJ
2.5 LO output (KarvVP is my role model:redneck:)
30" BFG ATs

so did the wife notice the LARGE GRIN???

She took it surprisingly well. Told her on the phone so she would have an hour to cool down.:haha: Also told her I'd "fix it". Hence the new project.:cheer: I think she'll "let" me go out again.

Thanks again for the kick ars time!!

3/16" is enough. I've really wailed on mine and they have held up just fine.

If you don't have a body lift, I would reccomend extending them all the way to the frame. Take a look at some of the Nth Degree Mobility stuff and you will see what I'm talking about.

Ooooh, those are cool!:awesomework: Thanks Karl.

Head spinning with ideas now.

If I only had experience working with metal.:booo: I don't think my first try is going to be quite that nice. But they will be all mine:redneck:!

I think I can get my hands on some stainless at a good price. How much harder is it to work with? drilling welding etc...

Thanks:redneck:

you will need to have a special setup if youwant to weld stainless...

I personally would just go with the steel... a lot cheaper and easier to work with.

I have had to spend a lot of extra cash just to tool up for a couple of special order stainless jobs, and in the end... it wasn't worth it.

just my .02 worth...

Thanks Zoediak I had a sneaky suspicion that might be the case.:thud:

I think I have some more info in my yj build up thread but I cant remember. Head up to everett steel, and see what you can find. I think 3x3 is the biggest in the 3/16th thickness

SS

SS is worth a lot more, and is heavier, and if you are new, harder to work with.
because stainless steel is full of chromium and chromium is very very heavy! SS is less forgiving when being over heated. When stainless comes in contact with non-stainless steel (or non-stainless steel lil flake from a shop) it will rust. Also welding set ups can be harder (not standard rods)

go with steel, rattle can it back, and buy some  with the money you didn't waste.... just my 2cp

ps SS is my favorite thing to weld after saying all that
ps SS = stainless steel

Sounds like steel and a rattle can is more within my capabilities. Should be less $$$ too.:redneck::redneck:
