My 04.5 d-max recently developed a rotten egg smell (no chevy or durmax jokes here). Gets REALLY bad at slow speeds or at a stop light. Don't smell it so much going down the road (cause I'm moving, duh). My first thought was cat.... but no cats on my Diesel :redneck:.

Searched the d-max forums, only thing I really came back with was a couple people saying bad battery's can do that. Looking for confirmation from the NW crew.

There might be some merit to this. I've never had any issues with starting or charging the truck, but Monday I came out in the morning and it was dead as a doornail. No issues Saturday, bombed all over town. Didn't drive it Sunday, Monday dead (NOT a good way to start a crappy Monday morning). Jumped it, charged it at work, and no issues rest of day or today. But today did notice the rotten egg smell was NASTY.

Am I do for a couple new batteries?

sounds like it's time for batteries but the only time I have dealt with that smell from batteries is an overcharge condition so make sure to check the charging system

if its coming from your batteries--BE VERY CAREFULL. Thats when they are prone to be explosive. 2 times now I have seen the side of a battery blow out--literally...

Put some new batteries in it, (obviously you need them) and if the smell goes away your problem is solved. But I have never seen or heard of that smell from batteries.

This. And when they go boom. Its very very loud and the pieces go everywhere

definetly batteries, possible ovecharge conditon. replace batteries check the charging system! or did someone leave a dozen eggs in your pickup:haha:

The odor comes from a chemical reaction and the gasses given off are close to hydrogen in how it reacts.

Go to interstate and ask for blems /blemishes
1/2 price got a couple for my d-max
For $35 each:awesomework:

:mad:thinkin' I'd save a couple bucks I did this a couple yrs ago (know the dispatcher, and am in good with the local rep)---and that's all they lasted---2yrs...I just bought the new ones this time around, and only pd 70 ea for the MTP65's...

One of the plates came loose and is shorting out inside the batt. Most likely causing your alt to run full tilt. Load test the batts, I will bet 1 is bad. Replace both..........................

I wouldn't even bother load testing them---could go BOOM!!!:yikes:
Just replace the batteries, then check the charging system to make sure the alternator wasn't hurt....:awesomework:

Ya--do not LOAD them... We don't even use that old skool technology anymore...

I couldn't remember if it was actual hydrogen that was produced by the reaction. I just remember it can be very explosive.

Well I guess I'll put out the cigarette and not use the open kerosene lantern when I change them out then :redneck:

thanks, I even have my load tester in the truck to check them after they went flat.... I guess its a good thing I haven't had the time to check them. Looks like Costco is in my plan today. :awesomework:

Go buy interstate:;...COstco batteries are sold to them by interstate, but it's their "B" line of batteries....they don't last as long....

There is a lot of stuff on the Interweb about alternators overcharging the battery and causing this problem for what it's worth.

Suppose I should update this thread...

Turned out to be a skunked battery as suspected. I went ahead and replaced both, it was pretty obvious which one was toast, the case was pretty bloated, I didn't even attempt to load test it. The other one looked fine and loaded tested happy. To I kept it around for "future". Once I got the new batteries in I check voltage and the alts putting out just about right at 14V with no obvious issues. Next time I have it up at the stealer I'll have them give it a more through test (however they do that). I'm suspecting it was just a battery who's time had come. Pretty sure they were original batterys ('04 model truck), so this is about the right time to think about replacing them.

Truck starts like a champ now.... now to just deal with a fuel issue.... I think I got a leak or pin-hole at the filter housing somewhere. Looses "prime" over night it the truck's parked at any angle other than slightly nose-down..... So it will start and run for a few long seconds, then sputter out (like it used all the fuel in the filter), then I have to use the primer pump a dozen times or so and it will start back up and run fine for the rest of the day.

I've had very good luck with Costco batteries, just about every vehicle of mine, and here at work has has "Costco" batteries put in it, and we rarely have a problem with rigs used regularly. Not saying your not correct, but even if they are their "B" line, they have been good enough for me/us.

Plus the most important part, they inexpencive and super conviniant..... Costco is essentualy right next to my work :D... plus it seems like someone ends up going there ATLEAST once a week..... (this holiday season brought to you by.... COSTCO!! :redneck:)
