I have a 2003 Rubicon with the malfunction light on. AutoZone gave me a troubleshooting code #P0456. One possible problem is a defective gas cap, but my cap seems to be ok. I also have a steering box leak, but the dealership wants to sell me another steering box and don't have a new seal for it. Help with this would greatly be appreciated!

Our 2006 Rubicon had that warning light on after filling up in So. Cali. We went to the dealer, they cleared the code and said to make sure the gas cap it tight after filling up and before starting the motor.

P0456 - Evaporative Emissions System - Small leak detected

OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description

Evaporative Emissions System - Small leak detected
What does that mean?

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) at different times performs various tests on the EVAP system. OBD II Enhanced EVAP systems are in place to keep fuel tank vapors from venting into the atmosphere, and instead purges them into the engine to be burned. Regular pressure tests are conducted by the PCM to monitor the sealed system for leaks. The PCM monitors the EVAP system pressure by watching the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor. When the sensor indicates a small leak in the EVAP system, this code is set.

Check some of the parts under your hood and see if they don't say Made in Mexico or assembled in Mexico . While not every Jeep was equipped with parts somehow derived from Mexico these parts used in the Evaporative Emissions System often failed and are commonly needed to be replaced . Lower quality is just a problem you'll deal with when you buy from Chrysler vehicles .

Check your Evap emission system hoses VERY closely, especially around the canister(wherever they put it in the ruby's), and the NVLD pump, they are known to crack at the nipples, causing small/large leak codes...there could be a failing solenoid, but I'd start with the simple stuff first...

FYI probably 80% of the emissions parts for chrysler, GM, and ford are hecho en mexico....VERY likely you will get just that when buying a new part...

90% of anything plastic I remove from a new vehicle, regardless of make is made in mexico, Ford-Chev-DC-VW etc... It's not just a Chrysler thing.

And on that steering box leak, I've had good luck with Prestone's stop leak additive.

E,e,s ?

My 2004 sport, had this some problem last year, also checked at (AUTOZONE) , I took it to PEPBOYS and they found that the EVAPORATER conections were not fully sealed, due to dried mud had been the problem. After they cleaned problem curred but not solved. It did happen again and to save me the $160 cleaning bill, I did it, and ADDED a thin lair of RVT around every connector and I haven't had a problem since. Hope this will help.

Thanks everybody I'm trying not to end up paying an arm and a leg.
Tony, my rig has no Mexico on it but my wifes Patriot does. Cant understand why they're calling it Patriot now.
