Ok,
Have any of you guys had experience with having tires ground and paddles vulcanized onto them?

I'm doing more and more dune trips and am looking to step up traction over my MTR's in the sand. My main question is what is the best tire design/carcass to start with for a 5700 lb 500+ hp rig that likes to get off the ground some??

any thoughts?

That heavy of a rig and with that much HP I would just buy good ones (non vul) to start with. Or buy some boggers and cut every other lug set off

Boggers have too little floatation and too much dig. I've tickled the throttle of my CJ with Boggers and buried it to the skid plate without moving an inch forwards.

I'd also worry about the weight of your truck, as paddles seem to not like heavy trucks.

I'm not yet convinced that Molded paddles are better than ground and vulcanized. An example some one else gave me is Robby Gordon and his 37" Ground "Projects" with Scat Trac scoops Vulcanized on.

My biggest concern is mot molded paddles are designed for light sand cars and such.

just be sure to buy ones that are not shaved. I have a set of cepeks that we use on the race rig (steel tub EB) and have no problems with them. Granted still not quite as heavy as you truck.

usually you start with a set of slicks, you want soft side walls. regular tires wont work especially well. contact scat trac

I used the bigger diggers, but you better be blown or nitrous to turn them
and shave about 2000lbs also to start, and install a automatic trans..

Thanks Roccrawler, planned on getting with scat trac as they seem to be the biggest player I was just trying to find some practical experience/advise before calling someone who will be trying to sell me their product.

Not sure the Bronc well ever go on that kind of diet. And auto's just aren't much fun ... I know for pure sand it's a better deal but this rig is still an "all around" play toy.

I looked at Skat Traks site and I'm thinking just the milder diggers would work. I don't want to over tire it either.

good deal, ya usually less paddle is better.. seems weird but you dont necessarly want full hook up. you will want to pull higher gears with wheel speed.
I did the stick thing in sand. nothing like speed shifting a dump truck transmission :haha:
good luck..

Whats wrong with a dump truck tranny... I just pass the lever to my back seat'r for 2nd and 4th...:redneck:

here u go.....http://www.skat-trak.com/paddletire.html have ran em with 800+HP and love to jump..
Thanks.. That will be my next call. Just trying to get a little more informed before hand. What basic tire carcass did you start with? and can you give me an idea of width and paddle count you liked w/ 800HP - I obviously will want a bit less tire.....

what are u going to do with the truck...drag,,jump,,,hill pulls ...if your going to drag you need to look for sumthin not to stiff...like a 1-2 ply side wall...the more side wall ply u gret the harder thay get...i like a good 3-5 ply

It's a play toy. I don't think I will do much Drag'n as has been pointed out here my NV kind of makes the quick shift an issue. If I could Pull 300 feet in one gear..Maybe, or short shift but my splits are big on this trans.

Mostly hill shots and mild jumps.

What were you driving at Dune fest? I spent too much time wrenching on mine. I had some problems with a broken hub and later a seized oil pump which kind of ended most of the fun for the week on Friday eve.

I did manage to get some air under the tires and have some fun before that though.
