Most of you know that we are building a house, and we are about 2 months out. I am to the point where the electricians are finishing up the lighting/outlets in the basement and I want to make sure I don't miss anything. It is just wired to code but I went and bought 6-4ft fluroscent fixtures to help with lighting. I also had them add a 220v plug for welder/plasma one day and thinking about another for a big compressor. I have them adding several regular outlets also. I am not much of a fab guy, but hope to improve my skills. I don't do this for money, but I would like to have an organized, well light place to work. I spend a lot of time maintaining my jeep and truck, so I have laid out the design with that in mind. Post up ideas or things I might be missing at this point.

Pics:

View looking at the main bay and the area to the right I plan to build an L Shaped Work Bench there. The main bay is 42x14 and it has 4 standard 100w bulbs and I plan to add 3 more fluroscent fixtures right down the middle.

This work area is 13x9. L shaped workbench to go along the left and far walls. Pegboard on top and storage below the bench. Craftsman box in the back right corner and a built-in computer and stereo desk this side of the door. I am adding 3 more 4 plug outlets at bench level across this area, in addition to the one in the middle. I also plan to have a fluroscent over each bench dropped down on a chain. It has a 100w fixture in the middle of the ceiling already.

Another view of the main bay. 12x8ft door will be nice. No more squeezing in a 7ft tall door! The area in the far left will be a metal fab area some day.

Closeup of the future metal fab area. It is 10x9. Plan to have a drill press, small metal table, chop saw setup and welder over there when I have the money/need. 220v plug for welder to the right of the small door and a 4 plug outlet on the opposite wall for drill press, shop saw, etc. It has a 100w fixture in the ceiling and I plan to add another fluroscent fixture here also.

Don't really plan to do much with this area, maybe store tube and metal along the wall. Park a rhino here, one day. This will be a pretty dark area as I don't plan to add much light here.

To the left is the man room (aka The Octagon). I will put a TV and PS2 in there, have tons of jeep stuff on the wall and have couches and chairs for everybody to hang out in. The door is the stairs up, to the right is the area under the stairs. I would like to build an enclosure for an air compressor and put it here. I want a belt driven 220v unit to replace my oiless crafstman POS. I will add a 220v outlet here to accomidate that.

Last couple places of mine were 24x30 detached or oversized 2 or 3 car garages, 8' ceilings. I had 10-12 4' flourecents in there and a 220V for the welder and assorted 110 outlets. I LOVE light everywhere in the garage. I never built new, so I delt with what was there or added a few where possible.

Hell my 1 car garage now has 4 4' Flourecents and it lights up everything great. White concrete block walls are a huge plus.

pegboard IMO is a HUGE plus also. White walls are great.

In your welding/chop saw area where most of the metal work will be done, I'd put corrugated metal on the walls to keep the drywall from looking like crap over time. Hell maybe even those plastic shop doors to divide it off to keep the crap in that area if needed down the road??

You seem real organized and tiddy, so storage, etc. is moot, you have that nailed.

NICE looking place guys, real happy for ya :drinkers:

Screw the Shop I wana see pics of the House. If that is it in the background of Pic #6 it looks awesome. When you gonna be on Cribs ;D

Lots of lighting and lots of power outlets.

Did you have them put outdoor power outlets around under the eves of the house? Makes for easy Christmas light lighting.

Did you prewire your living room? TV room for suround sound before they sheetrock it in?
Buddy of mine down here did that to his whole house when it was being built. Fugger even has speakers in his closet so when he's getting ready in the morning he is still able to rockout to the news.

Is there anyway to get a heavy overhead beam shored up in that garage, that you can sheetrock up to eitherside of it? I mean that you could weld an anchor to and support things such as an engine hoist? So much easier to store a snatch block then a cherry picker.

No sure if or how your plan on running airlines, but it'd be clean as hell to run and pressure test now so they are all hidden in the walls.
Dont forget speaker wiring in the garage you need sound out there son.
Internet plug in garage, you need a laptop or desktop out there for those quick tech question you need to get on here to answer vs. tracking your dirty greasy ass though your new house for.

That should overload you for a while :flipoff1:

That is the neighbors house in the pic. The house will be plenty for us and give us room to grow in 5-10. The wife has done an awesome job with decorating it, it is gonna be nice when done. My domain is the shop, I am gonna have all my stuff under one roof for the first time in 3 years! We hope to be in for XRRA Gray Rock, and we will have a get together after. Come check it out then!

Wyatt, way ahead of you. The whole house, deck, pool and shop are ALL wired for sound and internet. :flipoff1: Computer will be in the work space area. I work for a tech company, that was the first thing to happen once the electricians arrived. I plan to run hard line like John G has and then have reels with soft lines in different areas of the shop. His setup is super clean and I like that.

I definately plan on seeing it in April. I just dont think you want this clan over in your new neighborhood, making bad impressions on the neighbors from the get go. That retaining wall at the neighbors looks mighty doable on a Fitty. :flipoff1:

He only invited you over to his place IIRC. laughing1

smart man! molaugh

Cnt wait to see it myself...

Im my shop, I made sure there was a row of lights 1/3 from the garage door and 1/3 from the back wall. That way, you have light when you open the hood. If there is one row inthe middle, you have a dark engine bay.

I have 110 every 4' along the wall and use them all the time and I did the 220 plug and the 220 compressor (2)

Problem is, the 220 is on the back wall and when I want to work on something big like a Dozer or a Trailer, I can't get my 220 stick welder to reach it. I messed up. Get a 220 by the door. I know it is for your house, but if you ever want to add Drings to the trailer or something of the sort, you can get to the project.

No I invited everyone, just no fiftys. I told Wyatt a long time ago that he could crash there with his family if he needed to. Nolen, Joel and the rest of the MS crew, you always have a place to stay when you come over to ride. Holla!

Thanks for the tips and ideas guys, I really want to avoid having a dark ass shop to work in like I do now. The metal fab stuff is not a huge priority and the 220v outlet is right next to the door by design. I really just want to get it setup for the basics first and then add stuff as I find need for it

looking great Matt! it is kinda hard to tell how the floor plan is from the pics, but I am guess pretty much all of your open spaces are all one "area"?

cant wait to see it sometime!

So it has been a while but I have my little basement workspace mostly setup and I am pretty proud of it. Here are some pics:

This is the exterior entry next to the garage door. Got my compressor and hose reel here, along with some other random stuff. Nothing fancy

This is the cleaning suppy and car washing area. Towels, brooms, all the crap. I like to hang stuff on the wall and get it out of my way.
BasementShop003.jpg

Work area. Pretty much all I use frequently is here. Rolling box and bench.
BasementShop004.jpg

Sweet bench I scored from Phil's rental house! Huge, nicely built and free!
BasementShop005.jpg

No Shop is complete without a computer. Old desktop I have, wireless card and the old surround sound setup. This is awesome. I have the cpu hooked up to the reciever so I can play my mp3's through it
BasementShop006.jpg

Sweet bookcase I got from Jen's aunt for free. Good for fluids, paint, etc.

Rolling box, exterior door to pool area

Torn up panels from Nolen and Jim for decoration

Im basically going through the same thing , only X10 on the tools and equipment and damn even though I have ALOT more space, I still want ALOT more. I think the back of my lots gonna end up with a big building one day laughing1

Lookin good man, question, on the wood table... is that bitch sturdy as **** with NO wobbly wobble ? I've been thinking about doing something like that in mine but Im very undecided on wood or just do a larger welding table type workbench.

Nice area and damn clean. I am doing something similar once my shed is done I can clear out my garage and leave only **** I use/need in there. One car garages bring the suck

Yeah P I figured it might give you some ideas. The wood table is huge and the guy that built it was a carpenter so it is very level and sturdy. What I did to make it stout was use huge ass wood screws to attach it to the exposed studs in the house. I think it literally has 20 4" wood screws in it and it is not going anywhere. Long term I want to add a 1/8" of so metal top to it so I don't ruin the wood.

I am still collectinga bunch of tools as I go. I am no fab guy, but I would like my own welder down the road, just have too many expenses right now. I have a free drill press from my in-laws coming so that will kick ass. Also have a small bench grinder to mount. Need lots moe little stuff but I have all the tools to maintain my junk!

I was going to build a bench, but realize I don't work on anything anymore and would just clutter it up. Friend Tim is giving me some metal base cabinets and I think the top is some sort of plastic, but it might be metal I didn't really look when getting that bike from him. So that will be my new "bench" and stereo area to clutter up. I am tired of a messy garage.

Also thinking of painting the floor if I can get it cleared out enough and CLEAN it so it will stick. 40+ year old floor that might be tough.
