I tried to uninstall and reinstall, did absolutely nothing to fix the problem of avatars. I have not seen any issues you are referencing

Bad news... The site has been hacked as I thought. Here is what an smf specialist posted for you to do.
Your site (and forum) has clearly been hacked. Upgrade to 1.1.9 if you're not already there. Manually clean out any suspicious code like you posted, that survives the upgrade. Read up on the topics concerning the krisbarteo hack, and clean out offending avatars and themes. Change all site (system) and FTP passwords. Scan all PCs used to administer/upload the site for malware (especially keystroke loggers and password sniffers).

One thing is different. I use "See New Posts" to view the forum. before, when you hit back, the post you read was gone, say you had 10 unread posts, read one click back see 9 read one, click back, see 8. Now, when I click back all 10 posts are still there. I have to remember where I am and what I have read. I would love to have it back the way it was this morning.
