I have a question, being rather new to the wheeling arena. I have gone back and forth about tires on the ever faithful rig. Bigger, factory size, or something in the neighborhood of the size on there now.

If I do go back to factory size tires, (225/75-15) my next question is meaningless. So I'll ask it anyway, just so I have all the facts. I know most of the real wheelers here do their own work, ie, lift their rigs, but what about those that don't have the knowledge of how? Where do you go to get a lift kit put on? If I do go the bigger tire route, bigger than the 265/75-15 it runs on now, I am thinking a lift of at least a couple inches would be a good thing to do. Mostly to increase tire clearance from the wheel well.

Keep in mind, this is an everyday driver too. Well, actually, until last Saturday, it wasn't a weekend ride. :D

So thoughts? Ideas? No BS?

If you are getting a bolt on lift kit just go to 4-wheel parts in Lynnwood or buy a few tools and do it yourself.

There's Eastside Custom Truck in Kirkland too.

If you can get someone who can work with you (help you, provide tools) it would be a great experience for you. Knowing how to work on your truck is mandatory if you plan to wheel your rig, at least thats how I look at it. I'm sure there are a few that would help you out for a few brewskies

We all started somewhere and are on varying levels of competency. Back when I was 16, my friend's cherokee needed a lift so he bought one and we attacked it with no prior knowledge. Took way longer than it should have, but we did it and got the knowledge.

I say buy a basic lift and try it yourself. You'll gain confidence in your abilities. All vehicles are simply nuts and bolts... If you get stuck, come here and post pics and everyone will do their best to help ya out get over the hump :cool:

Yeah your first major mod on your rig. (lift kit for most folks) is the confidence factor that gets them deeper into projects.

I'd get a kit and plan a weekend in someones shop (or garage with tools). Have them assist you with putting the lift on your rig. You will really learn how things work and gain some confidence. Once you see how it's done, you will think "that's easy" until you move on to more projects. If you stick with this wheelin gig for the long haul, 5 years from now, you will be the one coaching the new guy.

And what Cascade Crawler said about working on your own rig is spot on. You really have to know your stuff to be able to wheel it. That way when something breaks (which will happen) you will have an understanding on what to do.

And the final piece of advice I can give you is to keep up with the wheeling boards. Don't take everything you hear on these boards as gospel, but you are doing the right thing by learning from others. (That way, you won't have to make your own mistakes) :;

Dude, I would come out there and help ya. Hell, I come out there and help other people on this board every now and then already, haha.

Just make sure you're able to take your time, and be willing to learn, and it can be done yourself.

What kinda rig are you talking about? That IFS thing in your avatar? I'm sure that if you posted up and said "people who want to help me lift my truck, be here at such and such time" you would get a response. A lot of people here are willing to help.

oh, and as far as purchasing a lift.... you can pretty much get one anywhere, and if you post up I'm sure there are a bunch of people that would be willing to help you put it on. But if you really wanted to just pay someone there's numerous people that will do it.
