Thinking about planning a trip to Smith Lake. Have never been so I do not know where to stay and where not to stay. When are the best times to go and when are the times to avoid. Will be looking for something that sleeps 7-8. Would prefer to stay on or very near the water. Also looking for a possible boat rental, pontoon rental. So what advice you all got?

My advice would be to stay to the eastern most shore closets to Dodge city/ Cullman side. Lots of houses and close to the local towns and such for groceries and places to eat. Tony Cousins (Grayrock owner) and all the gang from years ago have lake houses in that area. I looked up this place that has rentals on the lake as well, but don't know anything about them. http://www.boatrentalsatsmithlake.com/

Saw a different part of the lake a few weeks ago, near Double Springs. This is where the Sipsey flows into the lake. The Sipsey Wilderness is nearby. Civilization is not.

I am very familiar with the Jasper/Curry side of the lake. There are condos on the water that can be rented. 15 minutes to Jasper and 5 minutes to Curry. 20-25 minutes off of I-22. Condos are directly across the main channel from Duncan Bridge Marine. This is a full service marina that also rents pontoon boats. Condos are gated with a nice pool and covered boat slips. I'm sure there are plenty of houses on the water that you could rent I just don't know of any off hand. When to go all depends on you. 4th. of July is huge every year. Fireworks on the water and all that. But there's also a large Water Patrol presence.

Also. All counties that touch the lake are dry. Making it dry. No alcohol allowed on board unless it's in the original box being transported to private property. Just having a sober driver isn't good enough. I know that one from experience.
