I am very familiar with the Jasper/Curry side of the lake. There are condos on the water that can be rented. 15 minutes to Jasper and 5 minutes to Curry. 20-25 minutes off of I-22. Condos are directly across the main channel from Duncan Bridge Marine. This is a full service marina that also rents pontoon boats. Condos are gated with a nice pool and covered boat slips. I'm sure there are plenty of houses on the water that you could rent I just don't know of any off hand. When to go all depends on you. 4th. of July is huge every year. Fireworks on the water and all that. But there's also a large Water Patrol presence.
