Little brother has a XRC8 and it won't stay engauged. I know this has been an issue with some of them but does anyone know a way to fix it.

If you got it from 4WD parts carry it back and they will give you a new one if he got the $50 extended warranty.

Came on his Jeep so I have no clue how old it is or where it came from.

i seen a xrc8 on my buddies jeep quite working because his 4 mounting bolts where too far apart and it was pulling the ends of the winch apart wich caused the drive gears to dis engauge. was a simple fix, just redrilled the wholes and tightend it back up...it made the winch quite driving like it was kicked in free spool

I have seen XRC's fail right outta the box, a lot of them have screwed up free spool levers right outta the box. Either they won't freespool or they're stuck in freespool it's a known issue at SmittyBilt. Alot of new ones also are wired wrong to the solenoid. Try Calling Smitty Directly they might be able to help you out, as that's how they prefer to do there warranty stuff.
