We bought two yellow labs from the same litter about 12 years ago. Last month we had to put one of them down as she lost her fight with cancer. Last week, I got an email about a guy giving away his dog because he couldn't take care of it anymore. He post some pics up and it was right in line with what I was looking for. He is 10 months old (housebroken), he should get to about 80-90 lbs, etc. Also, the fact that he was going to the humane society was an extra incentive to get this dog instead of something from a breeder. He posted a $0 for sale ad on nc4x4, which is how I worked with the dog's original owner.

When we get the dog he didn't look much like his pictures. He was underfed and sickly looking. He smelled awful and he has some kind of advanced mange (mites under his skin that are itchy and contagious). We must have $400 in expenses this week just to get him healthy again.

I'm contemplating some kind of public call out. Not only have I spent a lot of money on a misrepresented dog but the guy is pretty much guilty of animal cruelty. I don't expect any money from him because I'm pretty sure he's broke but I'm kind of pissed about it. In the long run I expect this to be ok. The dog is sweet, loves my kids, and gets along with my old (remaining) yellow lab.

Would you just nurse him back to health silently or tell this guy what an asshole he is for neglecting his dog and dumping him on an expecting softhearted dupe?

On a related note, my wife and I are itchy as hell. People don't get advanced mange because the mites just borrow in our skin and die but it's gross that I have dead mites in me at all.

Okay...

Had a guy come into the hospital once with mange... per Doctor there is numerous types but what he had needed an antibiotic...

hope the doggie recoops and so do you and the family. Sounds like he is in a better place already. Just need to hang in through the rough parts with him.

Matt, I think you should take solice in the fact that you SAVED the lil dude, and go from there. Put the guy in your past and move forward knowing you have done a good thing.

I dont think a call out is wise, as I would view that as kicking a guy when he's down. He obviously had neglected the animal because he's broke, at least he was wise enough to try and place the dog vs. letting it get worse. Can you imagine if you were him. You have this animal you got because you had some affinity toward it, and you cant afford to keep it, but can't bring yourself to put it down? So you give it up. Thats hard enough.

I cant handle suffering animals, and if it was suffering at my hands I would likely put it down out back.

You did a good thing, and now you have a dog that will be yours for years to come, it will surely take some time for the lil guy to get to know you and what to expect from you. Just know that his past 10 months have impressioned him badly so you'll have to work extra hard to put those memories behind him and show him he has a home that is permanent and he'll be taken care of.

I'm a fringe individual. some see me as a ***** for my complete inability to see an animal suffer, and some see me as a monster for my ability to shoot or stomp something to death so its done quickly. I'm kind of in th emiddle. I will never let an animal suffer. I hate seeing animals on the road that are mangled from cars and not dead. I will hit them square to kill them if possible. cruel, I'd say not. I say not because if they get off the side of the road still maimed, they will die slowly in the ditch. if I'm going to take care of it, I have to make sure its done, even if I have to go back. I've gotten to the end of a row while cutting hay and looked back to see a baby rabbit behind the reel, under the crimpers and behind the sickle bar of the mower. I shut the machine down (had I put it back in the hay, he would have been sucked in the crimpers and smashed) and went to look at him. it had taken both of his front feet off. he was scared and hurting. So, I did what I had to do, only had a hammer and some bolts in the tool box. I smashed his head in with a hammer, and got no pleasure out of it. I'm not big on killing and dont hunt, but can't stand pain for innocents. wyatt had some dogs kill a calf and needed them shot. too big of a ***** to do it. no way. we had to have another guy go out and do it. I don't know.
anyway, I feel you did the right thing by rescuing, and have a right to be pissed at the dude. that's fuggin bullshit. I wouldn't say a public callout, but a private censure is in order. no fugin way should it have gotten that far. if it itches in your pubic area, that's not mange. :flipoff1:

For general population this is your "Advisory" notice to change the channel or leave the room.

Kelly, I have learned that we are a different type of people compared to the majority of the population today. My wife can’t believe that I would routinely shoot dogs that were dumped on us when I was growing up.

She thinks I’m evil, and how could I do such horrible things. Well the fact is there is still dirty work that has to be done, and a majority of people not only don’t want to know about it, but wont even acknowledge that it really happens.

For those of you that don’t know Miami County (Paola, KS) doesn't have a Humane Society, so people from in-town would routinely drive out to the country to dump their dog that they just couldn't keep anymore. For whatever the reason, $$$’s, sickness, the animals demeanor. No different from the guy Matt got his new lab pup from, except these people are lower than dirt. They didn't have the stomach to do what's right (i.e. try to give them away, or euthanize them). Instead they loaded "Spot" up and hauled his ass to the country and let him out to fend for himself.

Well here’s what happens to dogs out on their own. They starve for a few days then they start doing desperate things. Stalking and killing livestock is the norm, and if there are enough of them, wild dogs will start pack hunting. That means your 4 year old playing in the yard could be a prey. Remember these dogs were domesticated, they are not scared of humans.

So as a farmer, you drop $0.25 shell in the rifle and plug them the 1st time you see them. You probably won’t get another chance. The reason why I say this, is if you see a dumped dog, he's just been dumped and still thinks humans are approachable, and nice. He doesn't fully realize he's been abandoned to fend for himself. I don’t know how many I have shot, but the end game is still the same. I gave them a swift exit from their inevitably bad future, and protected our livestock and livelihood.

So that’s what I am trying to convey to Matt. The guy may seem like a lowlife that was inhumane to his dog, yes he was. But at the same time he acknowledged he was and took the steps to give the dog a better life. He could have easily drove down the road and kicked it out. Additionally I bet it didn’t go from zero to unkept. He probably thought he’d pull through, get a break, get some cash, get back on his feet, etc…..

I’m not calling the guy a Saint, just saying he’s better than the majority of population with regards of how to best get rid of their pets when things turn less than optimum.

yup, pack hunting is nothing made up to justify it, make him sleep at night, anything. We lose calves every couple years when a pack gets together. My cousin ron now shoots first and asks questions later. if there's a dog, especially if there's more than 1 dog crossing his cattle pasture, it gets a quick end from a 7mm mag. dogs in a pack can get unruly in a ****ing hurry. you think 10 drunk lacrosse players chasing a carload of girls is bad, the teeth come out when its dogs to calves.
funny you mention that about most of the population doesn't konw or doesn't want to know about what really goes on. that's what the gov't says about our spec ops and other covert ops. "you don't want to konw, out of sight, out of mind".

Made me a crack shot back in the day. I could drop a Coyote at 1/4 mile in a dead sprint across open field. Roll 'em with the 1st shot, and finish 'em with a 2nd.

My favorite position. Driverseat, rifle resting on the outside mirror, and I'm a righty, so I had to get the left lean down. skully

Work was slow yesterday, so I tried my best to sight my bosses new pellet gun in for shooting the damn squirrels that keep eating holes in his house. I know they are not wild packs of dogs but... :flipoff1:

Dude I have shot about 8 squirrels in the last year in our back yard, becuase they would get in the attic and keep me awake at night. I hate Squirrels

pellet gun is way harder to shoot than a conventional gun/rifle.

I have one that I shoot this neighbor dog with routinely for crapping in my yard. I use those little pointed pellets. I have sighted mine in with 30+ shots, and its just not accurate at all. Its about as effective as a sight on a paintball gun. Luckily he's a big dog, so I've only missed him once.
Fugger is smart too, he's on to me, I keep having to keep the shots fresh. Tuesday, I stood on a barstool on the other side of my house and prairedogged up over the fence, crosshaired him, squeezed, and I was down before I even heard him yelp. molaugh

This one is a pump that sends the pellet at 1200fps! You would have to meet my boss to understand why he bought this gun. He buys only the best even if he is only gonna use it once. ;D

Hell I am suprised he didn't get the Fully Automatic one. He must not have seen it yet.

We noticed something new today. He has one ball. ::)

It's not that big of a deal but it makes getting him neutered a little more expensive because the other ball is in his belly somewhere. In other news, his mange is getting noticeably better every day.

aight sickness aside, you need to play with his junk. Yes massage his sack. You may be able to get that distended teste to drop. You should be able to feel it, and massage it out. Yeah no ****, but it may save you a Benji or two.

Then again we'll get to call you Dog Balls!

Though seriously, I have done it on dozens of calves when I would band them for castration, they wouldn't always have #2 hanging, so you had to get up in there and massage it out.

Good luck, Dog Balls!

EDIT: Or Dog Nuts, I like Dognuts better.

Good Luck Dognuts! molaugh
