Got it figured out. My column adapter and valve were a little bit mis-aligned and binding up... took it apart and used the die grinder to fine-tune the mount a bit, changed out the steering shaft to an XJ one that I had that was a little tighter to take up some slop, and she's all back together and steering like a dream. Much better feel to it than the other valve and hopefully will solve my issues... we'll see this weekend.
