Looks like I am in the need of a new transmission and thought now may be the time to change to a higher stall torque convertor. What is the best stall speed for Rock Crawling. It seems to me that stock may be best for strictly crawling and don't mind just leaving a stock one in. I just thought it may help launching on hill climbs to have a higher stall speed.

What is everyone's thoughts?

Really depends on how hot of an engine you have. I cant see the use in anything other than stock personally. I think they do more harm then the few occasion's they might do some good. I had one in mine last year that was probably 2500 or better and it fully sucked ass ! laughing1

Stock. TC's are like pandora's box IMO. One may be better than stock but you will probably have to go through 5 of them to find it. Lots of labor, and you cannot use someone's opinon because everybody is different

Jason - don't put a stall in your buggy :wtflol:

All you really need is to get rid of all those transfer cases you have and get a 3.0 or 3.8 Atlas and rebuild the tranny you have

I agree with all the above. Hot motor= high stall high stall= no downhill back pressure for braking low stall, stock motor= :dblthumb: If you do change your convertor out, contact PTC (Performance Torque Convertors) in Muscle Shoals (?) (256) 383-6868 ask for Kenny Ford. Tell him what you have and what you are trying to do and he will make one up for you. He knows how to build them for Rock Crawling. :dblthumb:

i have like a 900 stall i like it

breaks sucks when your trying to stop in low :****:

I put the largest diameter stock converter (out of some kind of work van from GM) which equals less stall speed in mine. I have no Idea what it stalls at but it tries to push through the brakes in low! I actually had to clearance my bellhousing to make it fit :****: It crawls great, I couldn't ask for anything better, and I still can rock bounce and hill climb with the best of them.

Well that answers that question. I will stick with stock torque convertor.

Now let's see if I can get a second opinion on something else. I want to rebuild the transmission I have now. 2nd and 3rd gear are gone. Severall transmission guys have told me that the sprage? gear is broken. One guys to rebuild it back stock and any upgraded parts is a waste of money. Another guy recommends an upgraded sprage gear which is 300 more. This guy is Billy Landers and he is supposedly the guru of dirt track auto transmissions in the shoals area. I am somewhat leaning towards letting him rebuild it and spend the extra money but wondered what others thought about just rebuilding stock.

I know Jim (rockmafia) has a guy in NC that sells rebuilt HD trannies on ebay for $400-500. Sounds like that may be a cheaper option for ya. Maybe he will chime in with some info

Reverse valve body is a must as well Jason :****:

Oh and Billy Landers does build one hell of a transmission - I had one of his in a 72 C-10 that would snap your head back :****:

It didnt like the jump..... :flipoff1: Ole trusty 4spd took it like a champ... :****:

Yeah, my Woo Pow went Pow. I had been hearing a funny noise and thought it was coming from the transfer cases. I guess I was wrong.

I am going to get this trans rebuilt to hopefully stand up. When I get it back together, I will be back for more. thumb.gif

So Technically, you didnt make it up 16.... :flipoff1: I would damn near swear you winched a few feet to get in gear and then that would constitute you not technically making it unassisted.... :flipoff1: :flipoff1:

I guess your right. I winched a couple of feet and it quit. I was mad and jerked it down into 1st and it started moving. I drove out from that point.

I'll let you take the claim for that one. I would like to hear your name for it anyway. I don't have a good name for it.
