Ok so i know there are lots and lots of threds about the whole toyota starter issue but i have yet to read one that has the same symptoms my truck is having.
I have the 3.slow in my 89 pickup 5spd.
When i try to start the truck i get the whole click click click deal as if my battery is dead. From there i tried to jump start the truck to rule out the starter being bad, well when i turned the key over once the jumpers were all commected the jumper vehicle died, just flat quit running. we started the jumper truck again and gave it gas this time to provide more power to my truck. This time it didnt die but was damn close to.
Any ideas as to why my truck would be drawing that much power to start?
My motor turns over and everyhting while doing this but still dont start.
Im stumped....
Also i pulled my starter last night and tore the whole thing apart. There was a bunch of grease in the solenoid area. didnt look to me like it should be there but this was my first time pulling one apart. Is there a way of cleaning this without damaging the electrical ish inside this thing?
Should i put it back together and take to my auto store and have tested?
Any ideas would help.
Thanks

Your battery connection was probably loose. The jump vehicle almost died because ALL the starter power was coming from it. Test your battery first off. The grease keeps the moving parts from sticking.

Battery termianls were freshly cleaned and tightened compleetly. Even if my battery is junk a jump would still start the truck. with key on battery meter reads at about 2/3. Truck should start with just the battery. Just clicks though. Still dont explain why my starter would be drawing more current than normal.
And the grease wasnt around the moving parts, it was around the plate that keeps all the wires intact. I took the 2 long bolts off, thats where the grease was, not talking about the gears or plunger area.

A loose battery connection will not cause the vehicle your using to jump start to stall...Also, if said vehicle is a newer one, do NOT leave it running when you jump yours---you stand a good chance of frying the PCM, or any other module it may have due to a voltage spike from trying to jump the other vehicle....

Most likely the contacts inside the solenoid, or the starter motor itself is bad...have you tested for power at the B+ supply to the starter???....then when the key is in the crank position, have you tested for power on the other leg going into the motor itself???

When i pulled it apart i noticed one of the contacts was a little warn, had like 1/36" shelf worn into it. I cleaned everything with a wire brush and made them look brand new again but havent put it back together.
Do you think that little shelf would make the difference?

Also got a buddy comin over with a different starter to try. he thinks its for a 3.0 but might be for a 4 cyl.

Does anyone know if a 4 cyl 5spd starter will fit on a 3.0 5spd? i know they ask if it auto or manual but from pictures i have seen i cant see a difference.

Doesn't take much of a shelf to mess up current flow....I'd run down to the local rebuilder and pick up a couple new contacts and maybe a plunger as well. It's cheap and easy to do...if it still doesn't crank, likely your starter motor then....Have you checked the B+ cable for shorts???

test the starter with it on the bench.

Yeah, you could do this too...but I've seen them 'test' good on the bench (no load on it), and still fail in the vehicle when it's asked to crank the motor over (load applied)...

yah if you replace the contacts definitly replace the plunger too. i only did contacts and now my plunger is dead like three months later..

When toyota starter jumps off the bench, its good.

When it just click, growls or turns over with out jumping off the bench, its BAD.

Usually when they just click, a good 3 foot pipe jousted into the side of the starter is better than a rebuild. (info from my CSM)

Have tried this and it worked a few times but dont work any more....Also kinda hard to start with one person!

No i havent checked my B+ cable yet. Will do this when i get home from work.

test the starter with it on the bench.

Will also try this once home.

The vehicle i was using to jump my truck was an 85 pickup. Do i risk anything if its killing it when i try to jump my truck?

Also anyone know about 4cy and 3.0 starter differences?

Thanks again for the help :awesomework:

Not sure what the difference is, but a quick search on Oreily's web site comes up with different part numbers for the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder starters

A buddy brought one over for me, a 4 cyl starter, and the difference is the mounting bracket.

So i tore all the parts off the 4cyl housing and threw them in my 3.0 housing, everything fit perfectly.

Bench tested it and it worked. so i threw it back in the truck and now it starts. So im not sure if it was just the contacts that fixed it or the plunger or even the whole electric motor itself. oh well it starts! :redneck:

Again thanks for your guys input and advise.

Hope to be at walker on sunday if anyone is down. My buddies might not be able to make it and i really wanna get out there so let me know.
