We have a fireplace in our house that was converted to gas before we bought the house. What is required to convert it back to wood burning? If it is just gas pipes, I would think that closing them off before they get close to the fire place would eliminate the fire hazard, and theyre are really not in the way of burning wood inside the fire place. Would it have been converted to gas because of problems with the Chimney or laziness? I need to find someone in town that services chimneys and fire places, but I do not want to get taken on BS repair work.

My .02 worth says you probably have low ceilings in that room (10' or below) and the previous owners wanted a more efficient way of heating that space as ventless fireplaces do a great job at that. ie, I have one of each. If it is a gas unit with a chimney flue, then it will not perform as well as the ventless unit. As far as re-converting it back, if it is just gas logs they have added then you will need to replace the burner (pan) with a log lighter ( bar with holes) and you are done. That is all I can tell you based upon the information given. John G is the Prince of Propane and Fryer of Fireplaces. thumb.gif

im gonna holler at a ventless unit fer mah heezay those r tite yo booyang my parennts have 2 and they are awesome crazy efficient....

As long at the fireplace is capable of burning wood, you are fine. If the gas ling is copper, it must be removed from the firebox and the hole sealed. If it is cast iron water pipe, simply cap it off. If it is cast iron AND has a gas valve OUTSIDE the fireplace, you can install a log lighter. Local Chimney Sweeps

Yes you can go vent free and get all the heat into the room.

If you need any products, or advise, contact me.

Oh yea, I was a chimney sweep for 7 years, from 1980 to 1987. Great cash biz, but damn dirty!

John, thanks for your time this afternoon. I am going to have the chimney checked out, supposedly it needs a new liner. :dunno:
