So i installed hi-steer last night in the cold. it sucked. anyways my steering shaft from the firewall to the steering box is about half inch too short, is this common. ive done a few conversions and this wasnt an issue. on mine it is. also is there a technique i can use to center up the steering, has more left than right. i was thinking could i even the left to right turning and just re-position my pitman arm, i was way to ahead of myself and forgot to leave a mark to keep it center

Maybe the box is WAY too far forward :flipoff:

I dont know what to tell you about your short shaft, it seems that its a personal problem, lol. :flipoff:

To center it up, I would say that you need to center the box, then the pitman arm on the box, then center the steering wheel and tires to that. Then, make your adjustments to the toe.

step one--melt the platic break away pins and lengthen shaft
step 2--make tires straig and adjust draglink so pitman arm is paralell with frame

step three--done...

thing is, its not in the draglink, its in the box, wants to keep turning left after it hits steering stops. with the shaft you talking about cut and weld or is there another way to adjust it

If its trying to turn after it hits the stops, but wont reach the stops the other way (for instance), then you need to center the box, then re-index the arm on the box IMO.

As for the pins, I believe they're there to allow the shaft to telescope down in a collision so it doesnt impale you (in theroy). So, you just melt them out so you can telescope it out longer instead. Im not sure if you have to reweld it in place. I wouldnt think so, I dont really see why you would need to since apparently its only plastic that holds it in place as it is.

hmm sounds pretty simple, ill give it a try. hi-steer turns extremely nice on road. just need a steering stablizer

yep, just melt the plastic pins, or even drill them out. You will probably want to weld it back together just to make sure it doesn't collapes on you

Wait, you mentioned that it drives better on the street... How did you drive it if the shaft wasnt long enough?

i had it loose at the steering box side so it just slipped and for the firewall end i had about 1/4" of splines in just enough to make it home.

Steering shaft

Use the shaft out of an 89 or newer truck since they are a little longer. I had to cut a little off on my 85. On centering the steering, both the box' sector shaft and the pitman arm should have indexing lines.

Your fkn nutts. You can just clamp the smaller size dd shaft in a vise leaving theouter about 1/2" above the jaws and stick a wrench under it and pry up. I do not suggest welding it due to the fact its there for a purpose. If you get in a head on it will collapse rather than spear you in the chest.

Its good to her that you got it installed. I was about to call justin and see if he delivered it yet. I haddent heard from eighther of you so I wasnt sure you recieved it yet.:cheer: Now if you would just give up those tires you could have a sweet set of flexy springs and slider to go along with it.:flipoff:
