steering stabilizer for hysteer?

i put hysteer and 3" springs on my truck, mainly for clearing the steering. however i don't have a stabilizer on there right now. i'm not too big of a fan of potholes in the road jerking the wheel out of my hands, so i want to install a stabilizer of some sort. anybody have any suggestions, as it's pretty tight down there.

Weld a small tab to the top of your diff and mount one end of the shock here. Send the other ends towards the driver side knuckle and u bolt the the it to the tie rod. This solution has the highest dampening effect because it will be completely parrallel to the tie rod. :cool:
 
I got some brackets from Allpro. One set of brackets get welded to the pass frame rail and the other clamps around the steering rod from the gear to the pass knuckle. I can get a pic tomorrow if you want. Its on my 80 Toy with histeer.

i took my old stabilizer from my former steering setup and held it up down there, and that seemed like the most reasonable solution.
 
This is kinda off topic, but how hard was it to get the IFS steering box attached to the frame? Did you just go with the weld in kit from marlin or somebody else? Does this kit show you where to drill the new hole/holes?
 
the kit i bought(marlin's) didn't come with instructions, but it's pretty straightforward. to mount the IFS box, clamp it to the frame with a couple c-clamps and position it how you want it, mark the location of the holes and drill them(i used a 7/8 bit, since i think that's what the OD of the sleeves was, though the box mounts with 1/2" bolts). weld the sleeves in, and you're done.

probably a good idea to plate the frame as well, i skipped that step. i'll probably do it eventually if i get into any harder 4 wheeling.
 
I just checked the marlin site. There is 2 steering box mount kits. One is called "IFS Mount Plate" for $59 and "IFS Steering Box Mount" for $19. Would you recommend going with the more expensive kit?
Also, are any of the original holes used? Just ream out for the frame insert??
 
i'd go with the more spendy kit, i didn't plate my frame when i installed the box because i didn't have any tools for fabbing one up, other than my welder.

you don't reuse any of the old holes, just drill all new ones and mount the box to get the pitman as high and angled up as you can. a lot of guys cut out the body mount to get the box moved forward more.
 
Thanks for the install info. By the way, what have you noticed differently about the way the truck drives? Is it more street friendly than the old push/pull system? feel more stable? etc...?

Does your Toy have enough room under the oilpan for the stabalizer? Mine didn't, but that was partually due to the mounting bracket that bolts to the tierod. It either mounted the stablizer to low or to high. Might want to get a bracket that allows the end that bolts to the tierod to be even with it. Not above it or below it.

for the most part my steering issues are from running unbalanced bias tires:redneck: it no longer dives to the right if i slam on the brakes, and it doesn't act as wierd when i turn under flex.

i think converting over is worth it for the safety factor alone, all the amazing offroad benefits are just sort of a windfall:cheer:
 
Yeah, thats about what i thought you would say. I just needed to hear yet another person tell me how great it is so i can convince myself to buy it. Damn mortgage and other bills keep getting in the way of upgrading my truck. :offtopic:

Anyways kyle, please keep me informed as to your steering stabilizer solution. I will be getting crossover steering sometime soon and will be in the same boat as you. I got a 1980 toy with 3" front springs. Thanks
 
you know what makes a great steering stabilzer? hydro assist ram. btw not plating the frame was a HUGE mistake. take the box off and plate the frame before the worst happens. i do not want to be in the opposite lane when your frame gets ripped by the box. plate both sides as they get equal pressure applied. i tied mine into the body mount and the front spring mount for added strength.
 
Also im not a huge fan of stabilizers as they tend to mask any problems you may be starting to have till its bad or too late.

i don't see what the big deal is, IFS trucks are set up the same as i set up my steering...

i know that eventually with hard use it'd probably crack the frame, and i'm prepared to deal with that. it's not something that's gonna come flying loose at 50mph, i'd think the steering load is MUCH lighter at speed that it is wedged in between a rock and a tree on the trail.
 
If youre still looking for a stabilizer I have the kit from Trail Gear laying around in my garage somewhere that Im not gonna use, brackets and all,PM me for more info if youre interested. Ill be leaving town in an hour but Ill be back monday afternoon.
