This last weekend I was driving back to the trailer. 2psi in 44s with welded front and the steering valve in my hydro system was making hissing noises every time I used steering input. got to the trailer and checked the fluid, it was full but in the sunlight there was the slightest tinge of mettalic in it. I'm running a hydro boost pump, char lynn valve, and a kong double ended forklift ram. I assume the pump is on the way out but my question is.... How hard is it to **** up a steering valve?

I've had them apart on wheel loaders before and they seem pretty robust inside. Mainly worked on Parker orbitals but when they start to fail one of the 1st symptoms is steering drift. Or they can bleed pressure past the plate and puke the shaft seal out.

Does your valve have a relief built it? If so it may have a chunk of **** stuck in it holding the poppet slightly open.

Thanks:awesomework:
it still steers just fine but the valve is noisy almost like theres air in the system. it's the same valve used on the shaker machines I used to build , not sure if it has a releif, how do I know if it has a releif?

I just don't want a **** canned pump to ruin a expensive piece

Should look like a plug in either the bottom or the side. If you pull it out there will be a spring and a poppet under it. May want to pull up a parts breakdown for your valve so you don't let any snakes out though.

no releif. it steers just fine but theres that hissing sound. it only did it at full lock before but now it does it anytime you turn the wheel. i think the pump just cant handle the hermaphrodite setup I have. on the shakers we used a single ended 1.5 bore ram and I'm using a larger bore double ended one. I bet the pump is taking a **** on me

Is your pump like the one on a duramax? A hiss indicates a high pressure leak. The poppet on a duramax steering pump is on the back. It has a spring and a poppet valve under it also. Sounds like it's stuck. I'd pull it and check for chunks. Also dump the fluid and see how bad it is. I've snapped 3 shafts in p/s pumps. I never knew to flush the hydroboost and the cooked oil in there was really killing the pump.

it's a saginaw pump off a late 80's early 90's 1 ton chev. I'm going to pull it apart and check.
like i said my main worry was ****ing up the steering valve with shavings from the pump but they seem to be pretty durable units from what you said. Thanks again man

You could always stop by a hydro shop and p/u a inlet fitting w/ a screen in it for safety sake just so you don't have to worry next time:awesomework:
