80' toyota pickup has a standard four speed bolted up to the motor but has a 92' 22re motor swap. would it be a good idea to stick with the four speed or go ahead and change it to a five

What are you planing on using it for? offroad or onroad? Highway or just around town?

I'd go for the 5 spd swap! The 5 spd trannies are stronger than the 4 spd. But you might have to cut new holes for the shifters! And if you can find a R151f tranny you are golden!

Get a L52 tranny. It is an early 5-speed. In fact, it is the same tranny, externally, as the 4-speed. Just different internals. Check out Marlins' website, they sell an L52 HD that is just an L52 linebored to accept the much stronger late-model G58 internals. That way, everything is the same dimensions, everything will line up, and you still have a cast-iron tranny!

Are you sure about that? I thought 4 speed tranny had a removable bell housing?

I have rebuilt a # of toy tranies and I can say the 4 speed is in a boat all its own due to how the countershaft is desinged.
