Struts or Coilovers

I run ORI struts. They are great and i have had mine for 9 months. I don't have to run a sway bar set-up even with my big rig. Actually, I am still playing with mine to soften them as I have mine probably a little "to stiff". I have not seen anything bad about them and I would really like to see where there are bad things posted about them. In the thread on pirate every person that has them likes them and there are several people that swear by them after using coilovers and air shocks..... Also, in terms of cost, it is hard to beat them when you add up the cost of coilovers, springs, sway bar set-up and possible air bumps to just a set of ORI struts....Well I did think of one bad thing with them....the time wait to get them I hear is getting pretty big...I had to wait 7 weeks for my rears and only 1 week on my front two :****: I have heard wait times of 3-4 months at this point. Feel free to ask any other questions.

I went though this last year and after talking to the owner and Kelly about them, I decided I didn't want to have my front mounts redone and given the tight space I have. Their bump uses internal valving, so on a hard enough hit you could still go past the bumpstop and bottom the shock out. In my situation I would of had to redo a lot of stuff to make it so that a fully bottomed out hit did not tear up everything. I have heard good about them, some folks still run with sway bars, it is preference I bet.

Bad would be the 9-10 week wait for them and I thought I heard about some heat or fade issues with them at KOH. I think they are still a little more expensive than a coilover setup, especially if you shop around.

Bilstein makes a great coilover, I have been really happy with them. They have a big presence in desert racing, so that says a good bit about the peformance to me.

No preference for me. I simply have no need to run one because they are as advertised. I would say the majority people I have seen do not use sway bars with them.
Here is a link for your reading.

Greg Stone on this board switched to Struts and rode a few times without his Swaybar and ended up putting it back on because he felt he needed it.

Haley if I were you I would run 2.5 C/Os and air bumps. Something you know is proven and works.

I have read all the threads on PBB, lots of the same posters in there....

Shocks are all about tuning IMO. Haley for your big girl Cole's suggestion is pretty good

we looked into becoming a dealer for them. Even fulfilled the dealer reqirements put a set on a customers rig and our response was " ah there ok" Nothing bad to say, but we push our customer to coilovers more often than not mainly because a. they are cheaper even with a swaybar package and air bumps; b. we can get coilovers when the customer wants them (not 3 months later) c. a well thought out and tuned coilover set up performs just as well. AND acording to Mark at ORI they do have limitation on heavy rigs!!! I think on a smaller lighter rig with packaging problems they would be great, but on a bigger trail rig thats where I would be iffy???

If I were you I'd do some leaf springs with revolver shackles. That ****'s bangin! ;D

Would only go TJ coils since I already have the 4 link done.

That is why I think 2.5's would be good for Haley's rig. It is a big girl

I was leaning more toward coilovers since I slep on it. Its not as big as u think just has big parts. WB is only 115 1/2 or 117, hell I can't remember.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

By big I mean heavy. Especially the drivetrain. Air shocks and struts have a weight rating, so do coilovers. I think you will be on the edge of the weight capacity of a 2.0 coilover, especially up front. Maybe 2.5's up front and 2.0's in the rear

Prob go 2.5 all around cause I like to keep things the same.

1\4 elliptic :flipoff1:

coilovers 4 sure

my 1/4 elliptic works pretty damn good for the money I have in it.... :flipoff1: I have thought about the struts for a while and would probably be a good addition to my rig, but the weight of my rig does concern me with those. If you have the ability to tune or have them tuned, the coilover/air bump is definately a good route to go. I know they work, seen it first hand....as for the struts, its hear say and interweb talk....mostly good talk though and that definitely draws me toward them. I have had 2 different brands of C/O's and they both have had issues with the finish on the within a couple of years (Fox/SAWs), dont know about the struts though, they look like a nice machined piece of Aluminum(?), so they might last longer in that department......You can go back and forth all you want, but its going to come down to how long you want to wait for them and how much money you are willing to spend right out of the gate.

I have been planning on reworking my links F/R and changing the suspension in the rear, so I have been tossing both ideas around...just need more research and first hand experience with all the above.

All the coil over size does is help with heat dissipation. 2.0s will hold just as much weight as 2.5s will. The spring is what holds the weigh the shock is what slows the weight down. A 2.0 can be valved just as soft or stiff as a 2.5 as well.

For a trail rig I always say you cant go wrong with 4 2.0 coil overs and 4 air bumps.

There is no need for spending the money for 2.5s unless you want the look of bigger shocks, and they are more of a pain to mount.

That looks like a pretty good option and good price as well. get some and do some destructive.....er testing on them! :woot: :driving:
