stub shaft?

:dunno: It should take about an inch off I believe. Chevys run 12 inch and Ford uses 11 inch if I recall. Try it and see if you have enough spline I dont see where it could hurt. :dunno:

Re: Re: stub shaft?

I think you can run the stock Chevy with no mods. mdo817 had them in a ford 60 till he upgraded. You wont be able to put the small clip back on the chevy shaft though.

If they are an inch longer you won't be able to put the cap on either more than likely the splines won't go in far enough and you flange or hub won't have full spline coverage?

Yes. years ago the 4340 shafts came with 2 snap ring grooves. If you need a Ford length your cut off the first one from the end.

i bought some stock 35 spline chevy shafts from 4wheel parts afew years back and cut about 1/2 inch off and they worked fine cut them with a cuttoff wheel and a 4.5 grinder

Mine had the length modified, and might have had the diametor turned down also, you can see it in the picture, it is the middle shaft, Top is stock neck downs, middle are cheby 35 spline stub and non-neck down stock, the bottom are 35 spline chromo inner/outers

I can't get the snap ring inside my hubs, I'm sure I could on a puck though.

What purpose does that snap ring actually serve? Seems it would be to keep the axle shafts from sliding further into the axle, but thats not even possible..

It's there to keep the seal on the stub shaft pulled up against the back of the spindle. At least I think that's what it's for.

I had a buddy cut his dodge stub to fit a ford. I think he used a handsaw because it will leave a cleaner edge than with a grinder.
