Once the filter can is bent or colapsed your screwed.  At this point your friend will end up having to tear off most the filter can, use a punch or rods in the oil passage holes on the filter base to work it off ; cut fingers, oil all over the place, ect.

 

I have seen a tool that fit on a socket wrench that was designed to be used after the can was torn away.  It engage those oil passage holes.  It was on a roto-rack at NAPA or somewhere.  Not that I had to...um...err...buy one...
