let the issues begin.. so what causes the Dana 30's on these cherokees to get stuck in 4wd? My old 84 did this and I busted the hubs. Something having to do with the vacuum lines get all clogged up or something?

If thats what is happening. Usually the disco on the axle pops out. IIRC they are under spring tension, just put a TJ shaft in there and remove the vacuum disco crap. Being stuck in 4wd is not going to cause your Dana 30 hubs to blow up. Poor maintenance and lack of knowing when a bearing is going bad causes your hub to break.

well ok I don't know if it was the hub that busted.. But one night after playing around offroad I headed back to the house.. Went to back into the driveway, cranked it hard to the right and BANG. After that no more 4wd. it never disengaged and I obviously didn't realize it. What all do I have to do for this TJ shaft conversion?

For the TJ shaft coversion all you have to do is pull you 2 piece D30 pass-side axle shaft and replacewith a passenger side TJ shaft.

First unbolt the disco plate on the axle. Take all that crap out. You'll have to use a screw driver or something to slide the inner shaft out of the housing. Once you have the disco plate off its easy. The inner shaft is a beafer ****er for a D30. That piece never breaks. :redneck: On the disco piece that you pull out. All you really need to remove is the shift fork. Then seal it back up without that slide colar in there. Throw that in the trash. Thats it basically.

You other probably broke the ujoint. The hub on these is a sealed unit bearing. All it does is spin.

I thought you could also use a non-CAD XJ passenger front shaft, and do the same w/ the shift fork(pitch it and bolt the housing back up to seal it)....not sure--mine's a factory non CAD; If yours is set up with CAD, I've got a buddy up here w/ a good non CAD front axle assembly, lucky jeff---PM if interested, and I'll call him.:awesomework:

yeh you can use any one-piece. XJ shafts should work too. But the TJ shafts have a bigger U-joint.

Don't you need a special seal to use the TJ shafts?

Or have the TJ shaft machined where it passes through the seal?

I just took the CAD unit off, engaged the disco fork and plugged the vacuum nipples. Its just temporary till I get a posi lock but its stayed engaged with no problems.

you guy's are forgetting one important thing and that is the hub bearing has to come off before you can even get to the axle shaft.:looser: :haha:

yeah I got the posi lock on my axle and love it 2low and when I get stuck pull the cable and bam 4low.work's great:awesomework:

Well duh and so do the cotter pin, hub nut, brake caliper, and brake rotor but we were assuming he could figure that out. :fawkdancesmiley:

I know this is sort of off topic, but my son has a 90 Cherokee and he claims to get better fuel economy with the Jeep in 4WD. So maybe keeping it in 4WD is a good thing?

Nah, I didn't think so...

changing to the single piece shaft is not going to cure the "4wd" issue, putting the single piece in actually locks it up even more so than without (having the disco on) It does however elimnate the unsuredness of whether or not it is locked up,(had issues with my disco staying engaged)

Check the for sale section... I have a bunch of HP Dana 30 parts for sale
ie. single piece long side....new unit bearings...the works...:corn:
