what have others done?

i priced a sandblast booth at $85/hr and im guessing 4 to 6 hours so thats like $350 to $510 for blasting....

does anyone know how long it should take?

no paint to remove just light surface rust and put a profile so the paint will stick.

Killz etching primer---the roll-on type!:redneck:

what does it do?

looks like a stain coverup.... does not give a anchor tooth profile . from my experiance the new metal needs an anchor tooth profile of 2 to 3 mils for the paint to stick to the metal.

any real world experiance with blasting a chassis. what i really need to know is about how long will it take?:redneck:

I honestly have no idea what to tell ya--Not a body prep guy!:redneck: But I have heard of a spray-on etching primer that does work, just not sure what brand, or where to get it...maybe a body repair shop supply store could answer any questions you have....I'm guessing you'll have to sand the rust somehow...

most etching is done to stop existing corrosion. i have none just light surface rust.

Holy cow.....got $$$$$$ to burn?

Scotch bright the tubes, wire wheel the tight corners/joints, wipe it down with acetone and rattle can that sum bitch.......jeebus:rolleyes::flipoff:

That being said......I had my last chassis powdercoated but I'm "kinda" a BALLER soooooo.........:D I did, however, prep it in the way described above:awesomework:

my paint plan is rattle can hammerite or home depot version of it. im surprised anyone would powdercoat without a blast first??? ive never seen a powder coat product that does not require at least a 3 mil profile.

but i am curious what that powdercoat cost ya.

I just ran sand paper over the entire cage, washed with water, then wiped down with brake cleaner.

paid stuck pretty good.

Sure in a "perfect" world I woulda sand blasted then Zinc rich primer then 4mil PC.......but I understand that it is just a dissposable ROCK BUGGY and not a show car. I may get one more year outa this chassis before it's completely wore out then it's on to the next one(cue Jigga)

As far as the bond of the powdercoat to the Scotchbrighted tubes......after two years......there are NO areas flaking off....sure it's missing a bunch of PC but thats on all the exterior tubes that contact "stuff":redneck: All interior tubeing is perfect.

Price? Free for me(see the "BALLER" line in my previous post:redneck:) but I would guess 350-500 bucks, but thats just a guess........Conover would know as he had a couple cars, for the shop, powdercoated over the years

I copied this of CL a while back...

powdercoating

This is exactly the perfect way to go for prep, then either rattle can or powdercoat, don't get it "painted".

If it were for free, i'd sand blast it, but wouldn't pay. Powdercoat if you have the time and $$.

Exactly what mauler and clark said. If you wanna get trick, spray some acid etch on before paint. :awesomework:

With the weather what it is, by the time you get the chassis home it will already have suface rust with the fresh sandblast.

I would just scotchbrite/ wire wheel and rattle it.:awesomework:

I priced having somone do a total blast/prep and powdercoat on my rig earlier this year. He said it would be at least $850, And max out at $1100. As mauler said, Its disposable and it will get all fawked up if used correctly.

ok i got it... being anal i guess. sandpaper and wirewheel it is.. unleesss i can work a deal as i do know some large companies that do this.....never mind.

Thanks for the input guys.

bumpstops arrived today. back at it.

I know you have heard this from all the other guys but my .02, I got access to a massive sand blaster from a place I used to work. I used to sand blast crane booms. The compressor is a Cat I6 out of a Kennworth. 5" air line. Kinda cool. I had it dont in about 2 hours. Got it home and cleaned it with thinner. I got acid eching primmer and gloss black from Napa. My uncle is a master body and paint man and I have kinda learned a little from him... he always says "take time on the prep work... thats what shows." and its true. You can have the best paint in the world but it your have bad prep work if wont stick. Like Mauler said even PC gets scraped off on a rock or tree so I would not waist the money. Just prep good and you can always touch up spray can black. :awesomework:

X2. Just paint it, youll be pissed when you smash up against a tree and chips of your powdercoat finish start coming off. rattle cans are nice because you can touch areas up if need be or change the color for cheap :redneck:

Have you thought about soda blasting? A co-worker of mine did it to his 55 chevy and it takes off the paint and rust but didnt do any damage to the wires and airlines for his airbag suspension. Ill ask the guy who did it for him on a price an PM you.
