Zig has spoken well.I have seen people try to race in the mud in high range, using second gear. I dont suggest that idea. Having wheeled for a few years, I found what worked best for me was to try to keep the engine speed up by using a lower gear. when a lower gear didnt accomodate the needs of the obstacle, due to the need for speed factor, I shifted up but still used low range.Take a LOT of time to experiment with ideas. use the truck. this is something that while you can learn yourself, having too many opinions is just a bad idea. Once you figure out what works, you will see why the "old timers" are called just that.Remember, its about fun.
