So here are the specs.

1996 3rz 2.7 Tacoma 4 cylinder
distributor type ie.. not single or doubled up coil pack type..

Heres the problem...
Rally racing it down the trail the other day and noticed a slight backfire upon deceleration... nothing else
drove it home, developed a consistent pop and snap on decel and seemes to be running alittle rich.
pulled in the yard and came to a complete stop, idle falls slightly lower than normal, picks back up to normal but with a noticable miss in the exhaust and running rough. can hold the throttle slightly open with no miss and no hesitation off idle or at high rpm's.
when in neutral you can blip the throttle off idle and it revs fines but misses on the decel...

When crawling in low on the trail the idle gets rough and it wants to die instead of lug down and crawl...

Things i've tried...
Not check engine light, but Previous owner might have disabled
pulled and inspected/sanded all plugs
pulled cap and button, cleaned/sanded corrosion off all contacts and button
checked plug wires
pulled and thoroughly cleaned throttle body/intake
checked for vacum leaks
cleaned PCV
cleaned MAF

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks guys!

Plastic timing chain guide probably took a **** and has the cam timing off. A friend of mines did the exact same thing last year.

So I guess a full on timing chain job is needed to take care of the problem, Or just replace guide, put in time???

edit...
Upon alittle research i've seen that everyone sayd the 3rz timing guides are beef and the chain is a lifetime part...
could it be doing this and making zero noise under the timing cover?

can I put a timing light on it and check it that way?

Define lifetime. The one I was talking about broke at 250K. I guess you could check it with the timing light, but that's only going to tell you the timing is off, won't tell you where it is off. Fawk the shop, if you've modded that thing out that far you can fix it, yodas aren't hard to work on. thumb.gif

after actaully reading your post, I doubt its timing. I saw it had a pop and ran rough I thought it might be off one tooth. If it runs good everywhere but idle, you have a small drivability issue, or a gremlin. enjoy :flipoff1:

Yea, thats what sucks.. the thing is wheelable and driveable...
no major backfire on decel, just some slight miss... alittle fuel smoke when you're layin in her hard...
stalls alittle sooner than it should and has a very slight miss at idle... just sounds kind of flat when its coming back down to idle after you give it alittle throttle blip...
still runs smooth as glass if you hold it steady at 1/4 1/2 or wide the F open...
Will still rock bounce/rev limiter with no issues....

i have no clue about these motors but could it be injectors?
my dads DD acted like this when they went out in his truck

i know you said you cleaned/sanded but if it was me i would do a full tune up on it with new cap, wires, rotor, plugs, filters and run some sea foam in the tank and take the line off the brake boster and with the motor running let it suck the seafoam out of the can, just a little like 1/4 can. you will have to keep it running cuz it will want to die.sea foam is some good ****
but that just me !!!!!!!!!!!!

Techtafab--

Thats my next step, I was trying to be a cheap ass and avoid the 50dollar tune up..lol
getting new cap, button, plugs, along with the seafoam treatment..

is there any way to check your wires without having to replace them, there faawking expensive for four of them...

Also going to scan it for codes, as I believe the CEL is not working because it Never comes on, not even when key is in on position without engine running...

i just did a rewire and i know that the check engine light means a lot on them motors
you need to see if he cut the wire or wired around it ! do you know how to pull codes with out a scaner
