We're thinking about visiting my college buddy in Austin, TX for new years

Is there any wheelin around there?

**** dog tons of places are within an hour-2 hours from Austin. But if you are coming down to see someone, dont sweat wheeling.

Austin itself is full of stuff to do without going wheeling. Enjoy the town. Party on 6th street or if you dont want to look like a local 8th street. Venture across the lake and party on S. Congress at The Continental Club. Eat at Chuys, eat breakfast at Juan in a Millions on Caeser Chavez. Take a drive on the west side around the lake. Eat at Rudys BBQ (gas station) on Capital of Texas Ave (just west of MoPac).
Check out the Austin Chronicle (free weekly press) and see what bands are where. Austin is a hotbed of music. Everything from western, rock-a-billy, Texas/RedDirt, rock, alt rock. etc...

Hit the Austin Speed Shop on S. Lamar and see what Bob Bleed or Fat Lucky are building (Jesse James owns it now).

Check out the Hula Hut and grab a burger.

Austin is by far my favorite city in North America, I would live there if I could find a job doing what I do. At one point I was in Austin at least a weekend a month for something, football, hot rods, concert, just to party, the lake, bachelor party, etc...

If you must wheel, drive west/northwest to Katemcy, its just under 2 hours.

Dont sweat wheeling? WTF? I would rather spend time on the trail than in that silly-ass, overcrowded town.

You need to getout more if Austin is the best......

:D

Sheeeiot, for Texas , Austin is the only place to go hang unless your headed to see Wyatt.

I hate Texas , have I mentioned that before ? I wish Austin was in Alabama... that would kickass. molaugh

And for the sake of sounding like Joel a few months ago......if I were supposed to be visiting someone somewhere I would do that and not make it an excuse to go wheeling. Or as Joel would say "wheeling isnt everything"

Now if I were visiting any of the western states, you can bet I'd be towing a buggy.

I would try to go wheeling if it were me and I had enough time. Hell, take your buddy with you. :drinkers:

If I go it will be a multi day trip and I gotta go wheelin in new places - and of course take my buddies! :drinkers:

In my opinion, the wheeling in south-central Texas is as good as anywhere in the US.

Check out my Katemcy trip report in the Trail Ride section.

Since Katemcy is out (closed for the year)

Are there any other close parks? We probably won't make the trip unless we can make it a family vacation also.

Trees and Clein (sp) Ranches. I hear Trees is superb.
I think its spelled Cline Ranch. You have the Long Ranch in llano as well. Dont go to Boulder Creek Park (Marble Falls), that place sucks and I read a week or so ago they gave up the lease on the land what was for fullsizes, but kept the lease on the land for 4wheelers and dirtbikes.
