After trans warms up it takes a bit to kick into R when coming from 1st. But if you go from 1st to Park, then Reverse it kicks right in. If trans is cold it will go from 1st to R no problem. Could the valve body be dirty or need replaced maybe? Thanks for any help.

Re: Th400 question

Is it a rmvb? My th350 did that first go round, (art carr brand vb) had to put an extra few shims on the reverse pack, on the last rebuild.

Mine seemed to be worse in high range than low. Had to pat the gas to get it to engage. After engaged, no problem.

Re:

My builder said the reverse clutches were worn pretty badly. It did that from day one, (5 yrs) So he replaced them, and added more shims. Haven't run it yet to know if it's better than before. It never failed me though. Cracked the case, reason for the rebuild.

Sounds like it might have a transbrake style valve body. They're designed to flow fluid in the fwd and reverse direction at the same time which will cause a delay in the engagement of reverse unless you use the transbrake button to back up. Pushing the button denies fluid flow needed for fwd movement.

If it has trans brake, there isn't a button for it. It acts fine until it warms up tho.

Thanks, eventually I'm going to swap everything into a different chassis, if it hold out rill then I'm going to rebuild it

Yeah that's normal. My 400 has a tci trans brake valve body and I ran it for a year or so without a button. It would shift to reverse quickly when cold but after the fluid warmed up it would take a sec to engage unless I gave it a bump in throttle. Now that I have it wired to button I always put it in neutral and push the button to back up as the manufacturer instructions state for reverse engagement. Reverse engages almost instantly when you push the button.

Look at the solenoid on the passenger side of your case behind the bell housing. If you see 2 wires coming out of the solenoid, you have a trans brake valve body. One wire goes to ground and one wire goes to the switch button. All that's needed after that is to run a wire from a 12v power source to the other terminal on the switch.

I looked today, no solenoid
