Alright so I've finally made a somewhat concrete decision on what tires i'm purchasing when I get back from Basic in August. The plan is to get some 33x9.50x15R BFG AT's for my 84 toyota. No lift, maybe a tad bit of trimming but that's the plan. I run about 75% street, 15% logging/fire roads, 5% wet sand, 5% mud. Is this a pretty good tire choice for my application?

Also, I know I'm gonna need to make a gear change for going to 33's, will 4.37diffs from an earlier 4 speed truck work to correct my ratio and drop right into my housings? Or am I going to have to pony up for 4.56s or 4.88s?

Thanks again guys!

well actually I'm at home already :fawkdancesmiley: and I am going pretty big, this is no lift I'm talking about here, not much cutting either :fawkdancesmiley: :fawkdancesmiley:

And the other thing is, I'm gonna try and find some 4.37s out of a stock 79 4-speed or should I just try to find some of the stock 4.88s that came as an option with some of the 3.slows? What do i need to look for to find the 4.88s?

it was stock 4.56's that came in the 3Liters. WHat year of truck is yours? The V6 ring gear is different than the 22re's ringear. We'll need to kno if you have IFS or solid axle. If you have a solid axle then you will still have to buy front 4.56 gears.

you can fit 33's with no trimming with no lift. as far as gearing, there wont be much of a difference really so you shouldnt waste your money on gears just yet. wait till you get bigger tires (35+) to buy gears.

I have an '84 solid axle. but that's a drag....guess I'll be looking for the 4.37s then.

Well I'm running 30s right now with the 4.10s and I like how my truck is set up torque and power wise will going with 4.37s and 33s keep me where I'm at?

my truck came with the 4.37, and I started burning clutches with 33"tires untill I bought my 4.88

Maybe you just suck at driving a stick?:fawkdancesmiley: Just messing with ya, I do pretty good, just got done with this trucks first one at 195k miles.

I believe auto's came with 4.88's stock, or something similar to that, and they should fit in your axles

I looked around ALOT and decided on 33x10.5 bfg mud terrain.
Mine is IFS, so a litle different. I'm running the bfg all terrain 32x11.5 now,and i'm not terribly impressed. they are mostly worn t though. i don't know what my gearing is (stock) but I do know I need to go a little lower.
I'm thinking lowering the ratio in the transfer case is a better bet, as mine sees alot of road use as well.
I have 3 transfer cases now, so I might go with a double case.
You might think about that as well.
It's another option.

I'm not aware of any factory 4.88 Toyota gears (maybe in motor homes or something?). Some of the later 3.0L rigs came with 4.56's stock like Alpine said, and I believe most of the auto 4 cylinder rigs came with 4.30 gears. However, if you decide to go this route by tracking down factory thirds with these oddball gears, you're going to have to find two rigs with the same gear ratios and pull the rear thirds out of each, since you'll mostly find the different ratios in later (IFS) rigs. You might find earlier rigs with lower gear ratios, but in my experience most all of the ones I've found are 4.10 gears... 4.10's are just the most common, and finding the oddball factory thirds is only getting harder... not to mention you're going to be dealing with used/old gears and bearings.

What I would do is just run the 4.10's as is for now and save money to have both diffs regeared to 5.29's. No sense in wasting money on 4.88's when there's always the possibility of going with bigger tires down the road (you say you won't now, but you will).

5.29's is NOT too much gearing for a stock 4 cyl. 22re and 33's. I have a friend who's been driving his '85 runner all over the western states with 33's and 5.29's and he says it's great. I drove the rig home for him when he first bought it and had no trouble doing 70mph on the freeway.

BTW, the BFG AT sounds like a great tire for what you want to do. I'd be tempted to go with the BFG MT or another slightly more aggressive tire if it were me though, mainly because I like the looks better. You can't go wrong with the AT's though, since it sounds like your rig sees a lot of street miles.

Plus the V6 ring gear is slightly different than the 4 cyl ringear. I believe it has 4 spider gears instead of two or something like that so im not sure if it would work in the front housing without modifications. Correct me if im wrong.

any 8" diff will work in a solid axle truck. doesn't matter if 4 banger or V6.:awesomework:

So basically the conclusion that all of you guys are coming to is that I should just stick it out with my 4.10s and 33s or pony up for some 4.88s eh?

If that's the case I'll wait until I can get some parts piled up to do RUFs/Chebbies, 35s and 4.88s or 5.29s all at once :awesomework:

ACTUALLY not matt, toyota manufactured a vehicle that came with a gear ratio of 4.875 which rounds up to a 4.88. im not sure which one it came with but i know its out there. heres a link to the page i found out at

Yeah, I forgot about those... I guess they require a special carrier (or was it a special housing?). Anyway, good luck finding them. :D

The 8" toyota diffs that had the 4.88 factory gear ratio were a few 92-95 4runners that had the fully loaded v6 option, also 4x4 option, also automatic tranny option and last but not least it had to have the factory 31" tire package.
I just happen to have (1) factory 4.88 v6 diff..............$300.00. :D
