I am pretty sure there is a law that states that exhaust piping has to exit close to the rear / side of the vehicle and can't just point straight down right after the muffler (ie exit under the vehicle)

With that being said, what is the best way to route the exhaust on a TJ? The stock configuration for me is not cutting it, the exhaust pipe hits on the passenger side shock and keeps messing it (the shock) up. Plus there is only about an inch of clearance between the gas tank skid plate and where the shock is.

What do I do? I have plans to move the entire gas tank assembly up into the undercarriage more, but that will come later.

According to Jonathan, if you have emissions testing where you live, you have to have the whole tailpipe on the rig or they won't test it (his dad's experience).

Besides, dumping it right out of the muffler under the rig is REALLY damn annoying for the most part... reverb city... I had to remove my tailpipe on saturday when I built my anti-wrap bar and it sucks... I smell like exhaust fumes after driving my rig and the drone is so bad on the highway I used earplugs on the way over and back on Sunday.

Don't know what the answer is.

You could just take it to an exhaust shop and work with them to get the pipe venting out the back, but clearing all your 'junk'...

It does clear all my Junk, but when the tailpipe gets hit on things, there isn't much room for it to move. I don't mind it hitting on the gas tank skid, but if it moves the otherway, it heats up the shock and crushes it.

It's a major PITA because I have to replace that shock at least once a year.

Can I suggest A-1 in Everett, he has done over 20 different rigs for me ,just the way I want,he understand clearence issues and is fast.

I wish I had a picture of my exhaust. It seems to do the trick and is legal. Dont dump it down whatever you do. Your exhaust will kick up so much dust on the trail you'll want to go home.. straight out the back is probably the best.. Mine hits the gas tank skid everynow and then..

I have a set up for you I just cut it off my TJ to put my long arm kit in. I don't think the 50 series flowmaster will fit back in so I will have to get a new mufler. after catching my tail pipe on a rock and destroying my shock I had a new tailpipe bent up. It stoped where the stock one went down after the axle. It doesn't seem to kick up much dust and is almost imposible to hit. When I get my new muffler I will have the tail pipe ran the same way.

i just had to de emissions and they only pluged my 01 into the cumputer no tail pipe. but on the subject of rerouting the pipe, can the be tucked out the rear and not hit the shock on a sideway jolt?

I got my exhaust done at GaryTJ's shop in Stanwood.

He did a kick ass job. He reformed the exhaust pipe and bent it real close to the gas tank skid. No more shock problems. :clappy:

And it's taken a couple good whacks too, no problems at all with the way he hung it from the frame. I highly reccomend him if you need your exhaust done.

when i took my 96 in (OBD2) wich they only plug it into the computer, and no tailpipe, i had a dump, right after the muffler, and they told me they wouldnt even plug it in till i got a tailpipe. thats been fixed for a long time. :flipoff:
