It is a ways off, but who doesn't want to think about their next tire purchase months, or even years, before the day...?

I currently have 35x12.5x15 MTR's on my truck. Got 'em from a buddy with roughly 40% for $300. I really love them. They have lots of traction, sidewall protection, wrap, and are actually pretty nice on the highway. Only in the nastiest conditions, namely clay/muddy sitiations, have I found them a little annoying...

Enter the IROK. I know several people who wheel them and really seem to like them. I hear they are suprising on the road (at least for a bias) and seem to have gobs of traction and self-cleaning ability. They are cheaper than the MTR's as well. I really want to go with something in the 36-38" range...

I do drive it where I go, and enjoy jumping from road to trail to road again. For a guy who isn't broke-**** poor, but doesn't have money falling out of my drawers any time soon, what tire would you suggest. Feel free to suggest others, as well!

BTW, I have ran BFG M/T's (31x10.5x15) and they were adequate, and also SSR's (ok, for the most part....sucky for the money!) 33.12.5x15's.

I love my Iroks:D but i also am leaning towards the maxxis creepy crawler or the bfg red label crawler for my next tire. The Iroks do kick ass they still flat spot badly like any other swamper but street ride is not bad and not to loud at all. In my opion the pluses out wiegh the negatives ten fold!

radial or bias?

i'm pretty sure he'd go bias.

after, what i have learned/done as far as mounting and balancing my own tires and seeing the characteristics of the IROKS on the road, i will probably be a die hard irok fan...for a long time.... i have my third set (first set brand new) and i really love them. In the snow last year they rocked, as jthompson so whole heartedly knows and is probably not fully ready to admit...:fawkdancesmiley: :hi:

PRO:
-Cheap
-good road manners (when balanced...)
-good sidewall traction
-air down great
-stay on the bead
-form to objects very well
-clean out well

CON:
-outer lugs wear fast.
-A little noisy (but what big balloony tire isn't?)
-A little soft (but it's for offroad use, so it should be)
-"Balloony" profile (which i know you're not TOO excited about...)
-Tad wider than what you have now...

I went from 35" BFG mtrs to 36" Irok's.

BFG's. I loved them and would go back if I couldn't get Irok's. They did excellent on the trail and drove very nice on the street. I popped a few sidewalls, but they held up pretty good for the abuse I put them through. A couple of years ago I ran sadie creek in the rain. 4 rigs , 1 with bald 33" BFG's (winched 5 times) 2 rigs with TSL's (winched twice) and my rig with BFG MTR's, ( No winching for me). So IMO they perform well, even on the rocks their pretty decent.

The IROK's. (bias)

First thing I found out was I needed and alignment. I had death wobble like a mofo. A simple back yard aligment, more BB's in the tire and it was driveable at highway speeds.

On the road, they suck, plain and simple. If your looking for traction on the road they awsome, but for the way they handle they suck. I run mine at 20psi and they still wear down the center tread.

Offroad, they rock. I usually run them at 8psi and they grip to everything. I will buy another set but not until my trailer is purchased.

my iroks rode better and quieter then my bfg muds. i would run them all year long if i wouldnt have to buy a new set twice a year.

I ran Irocks for a couple of years, and I ran alot with a couple of guys with the MTR's, and the mtr loads up real bad in the mud compared my Irocks.
for the money snow, mud rocks the Irocks are one of the best.

(I can not speak for on road manners, I never ran my Irocks on the pavement for more than a few miles)

im on my first set of Iroks (thanks to BoonieBuster!) and love them. once i wear these down or jsut get bored with them im stepping up to the 39,5 iroks.:fawkdancesmiley:

For a street driven rig that you still want a good bias/tough tire for, the Irok is great. I had the bias 36x13.50's for a while and was really happy with how they performed off road, and even happier that I could drive to and from the trail and on the highway at 60mph with very little issue. I didn't have mine balanced, I just threw about 8 ounces of airsoft pellets in each tire when I mounted them up, and they rode pretty good on the road for a bias tire.

My only complaint was that they do wear fast when you drive them on the road... but they make up for that in cost, I guess. Mine wore down the center lugs fast even at 17 PSI on the street.

wait a while and you might get my hand me downs again:haha: (in the 39.5s:; )

radial or bias?
For the IROK? Bias all the way. But, I figure the MTR is rather flexy for a radial.

What are BFG MTR's?

I had BFG muds and they rode like a friggin luxury tire...
I love the 42x17
didnt care for the 42x15

Why? Less sidewall flex/roll? I have wanted to see what peoples opinion was of this... 17" has more plies/higher load rating. Doesn't this make the tire less flexy and more rigid? I am afraid if I get 17's, then my tires won't squat or conform to anything with the valve core pulled!
I feel the 39.5 has got to be the best irok size made actually

Why do you say this? I may have to just save to buy the 39.5's, and in the meantime, prepare with Longfields!!:D

17's in the 42's have less side wall roll to them . 15's When ran low they tend to fold under and have caused me to roll more when all the weight is on one wheel,

the 39.5 is a good balance of width and height from what I have seen and work great on a lighter rig like a toyota or lighter tube car.

my $.02 of coarse

I run the 40 krawlers now but only because of the sticky tread. I will go back to irok if not for that
