I've been working on a rig that has a 22r/5 speed/dual cases.

Tonight we were trying to get it out of the shop and it had some trouble starting.

I have a couple issues I need help/advice with.

1: When the trans is in gear, with the clutch pushed in and you roll the vehicle you can hear a bit of grinding noise in the trans. If you put it in neutral it doesn't make the noise. I also noticed there is a little bit of play in the contact point of where the rod hits the slave cyl. I'm going to try to bleed the slave tomorrow and see if that helps. Is this normal? I'm thinking maybe the clutch is not fully engaging due to the play and thats the noise I'm hearing.

2: My starter seems to be screwed/dead. I think the bendix gear was hanging up and not retracting. After trying to start the truck and getting it started we got it to run for a few minutes. After 5 mins of the truck running the starter was hot enough to where you couldn't leave your hand on it for more then a second or two.

My question is, do Toyota starters require shims? There are no shims in it currently and I'm wondering if that may have been part of the issue.

sorry for the newbie questions, I've never dealt with Toyota crap before. Any help is appreciatted.

Like with MOST noises I haven't a clue about your trans unless I was listening to it myself.

As for the starter, no Toyotas Don't use shims. Just bolt it up and go.

As a side note, Shims on starters is why GM is where it is now. WTF :eeek:

Nick, If you end up needing any parts for it give me a ring, have alot of everything sitting at the shop

as for the strater for some reason when i had my 22r i had problems all the time with them i would just buy on with a life time waranty so when it went bad i would just get a new one that propbley dos not help ya much but i would just buy a new one autozone is a good place cause they dont hassel you when you try to return it. but due to the fact that i had a bad starter is the only reason my truck was not stollen
