The question is which front axle to use? It is going to have 3rz, toy 5 speed, 4 to 7 marlin gears and going to be sItting on 39 reds. i have fj80 axle with a high pinion 3rd in it that I can build. Or a Fj 60 rear axle up front with a big 9in 3rd and Fj 80 outers on it. I have read that the high pinion 3rd is really strong cause the way the gear is cut. Any info would be great thanks

I'd sell the HP 3rd to fund building the 9.5" hybrid front...

Or if you could run the FJ80 front as-is, and if you break it, build the hybrid later.

Sell them both and buy tons. Save money in the long run.

couldn't agree more... I have taken and upgraded/replaced almost everything possible on my Toyota front end and some stuff on the rear as well... could have bought a decently built set of tons .. or probably 2 sets of stock tons... if you don't have any axles yet go tons

I have both and the fj60 just needs the Fj 80 balls welded on it. Just stripped the fj80 down tonight . I want to stay with toyota stuff cause thats all I ever had. Whats a high pinion 3rd worth?

I'd ask $350 for it stock. They are a much wanted bolt in upgrade.

I didn't break anything in 7 years of wheeling my 4runner with the 22re, on 35 tsls, 38 tslsx, 37 treps, 37 reds. I put a 3rz in and every other time out something was breaking. I sold all my toy stuff to fund a set of Tons, couldn't be happier.

Most are going to say go to tons...but you can break anything if you want to. GONOVRIT has broken a few LP60 ring gears and twisted/broken some shafts with a 22ret buggy on 39 reds. Its around 3700lbs or so without him in it. Just another perspective...

Your drivetrain is exactly what I was about to drop in my Samurai before I got lazy and just bought my 4Runner. I was going to run a full 30spline built FJ80 front non e-locked axle and an FJ80 rear axle. But the rig should have only been around 3k lbs when done. IMO keeping toy stuff alive has a lot to do with how heavy your rig ends up being. I've done the swap from toys to tons and I have done the cookie cutter toy axle build. It all depends on what you want the rig to be like and what your driving style is. I didn't go that many more places, if any more places on a 60/14 42" TSLs than I did on toy axles and 38" TSL's and I didn't do the build because I was breaking a lot of Toy axle stuff. I did it simply to try something different. It wasn't for me. I just prefer a narrower more nimble rig. There is no good solution IMO. You are just moving the weak link around in the driveline. Build up some tons and beat on Toy running gear and the inputs and outputs of that 4.7 case are going to become your limiting factor. I prefer to have the weak link something easy and relatively cheap to fix like a shaft, hub or toy 3rd.
