So, I have a few of the lower studs that hold the diff in on my front housing broken off from some rocks and crap. I haven't really looked before in the past, and I got to thinking, how are those things put in? Are they a regular threaded stud that I can use an extractor on to get the broken ones out? Or, are they splined and pressed in? If thats the case, whats the trick to getting them out? Also, any suggestions for replacements?

Threaded stud. Best to replace them with the same thing, dealer usually has a few on hand. You could use a bolt in a pinch.

Ok, perfect, thanks.

Couldn't I just grab something from McLendons or B&B and run those instead? Assuming they have something that fits... Id just rather go to a place closer than to the dealer to pay for em there.

I just saw Trail-Gear has a stud eliminator kit, they're just button head allen bolts that apparently thread in from the backside, but they want $30 for it. I'm sure I could find the same hardware at the store cheaper, and I already have the RTV but I use Ultra Black, lol. If I had seen that earlier, I could have clearly seen they thread in.

You'll have to use sealant on the threads of a normal bolt. The studs are self sealing when you bottom them out, they have a smooth center section.

That trailqueer "stud" kit deal is ghey :rb:

Never thought about the stud shoulders sealing, good point. I was just trying to think of something that might work and might be an improvement. Youre right though, the shoulders are kinda nice that they seal. I wouldn't buy that kit anyway, WAY overpriced IMO.

I guess Ill just see what I can find at the hardware/auto store for studs before I try the stealership then. Thanks!

I have found them at the parts store in the past. Just take one in with you to match.

And note that there is a long side and a short side. As long as one side is at least as long as the stock stud's long side it'll be fine, the other end can be quite a bit longer and not hit anything.

:haha: I just reread my post and got myself confused. Just to clarify, the stock stud short side is the end that goes in the housing.

Should be able to find them at either an auto parts store (the NAPA in Woodinville used to have a decent selection of hardware) or at McLendons. When you go to McLendons (probably have to go there to get the right nuts), they should have a drawer or two of just JIS fasteners so all the nuts will be the same size. It sucks to have a bunch of 12mm nuts and 3 13mm when you're laying under there... It's worth it to find the JIS nuts.

Bump back from the dead...

I couldn't find them at any auto parts stores or McLendon's. McLendons had something close, but they were almost $2 each and only had about three of them. Dealership was like $15 for all 10.

Everywhere I looked only had fully threaded shaft in the 8x1.25mm, save for those three at McLendons that had the center section unthreaded.

I also did a stupid thing and forgot that I swapped rear axles, so I can just pull them out of the old housing now
