I know what you're thinking. How can anyone NOT know what to do. Just keep in mind Im still building my first truck here:fawkdancesmiley:

So, heres the deal. I have heard that typically people use the top shift cases for duals. I assume the top shift case becomes the rear case, is that correct? Does that mean then whatever case you have existing, be it top or forward shift, will be your front case? If that is all true, I have heard there are conversion kits to go from a forward shift to a top shift case, is that also true? If so, where can I find such a thing?

Basically, I have a forward shift t-case in my truck now. I also have a couple spare forward shift t-cases. Can I make dual cases with these two items and an adapter? If not, can I buy a top shift t-case and add that behind my forward shift case with an adapter? Or do I have to swap my tranny/t-case to a top shift style then add another top shift case? :scratchhead:

PS - All cases are non-turbo, with stock input and outputs and I plan to keep them that way for the most part for now...

EDIT: Ive read through most if not all the tech pages on Marlins at one point or another, I just dont remember off the top of my head if this is possible or not.

Whatever case you have now can be used as the forward box. That way there is no need to convert to top shift when the trans is already set up for that case. The rear case HAS to be top shift as there is no place for the shifter to go in the adapter.

Its been awhile since I've see topshift conversions sold aftermarket but its easy to cut and weld the correct parts on your current forwrd shift rods if you can't find top shift rails.

So if I buy an adapter, I can make my case the front case, then the adapter, then either modify mine to work (cut and weld the little tab thing, right?), or find a top shift case for the rear? I would need another shifter for the top of my original case, and at the price of those, I could probably find a used top shift case.

Shift rails are different from top and front shift, you need the correct set for the rear case. All you really need is the aluminum casting and the shifter parts, the gears are all new if you're using lower than stock gears. Then you slap the rear half of your transfercase onto the back of all that.

Yes use your existing case as the front case then find a top shift case for the rear. Bolt it all together and you have duals.

don't waste your money on another case, you can make do with your forward shifting cases. they are they same internally they just have different shift rails. are you running stock duals or geared? if all you need is shift rails for a top shift case to make your set up work i know i have a bunch of transfercase parts in a box with a few sets of top shift rails.

I plan to just run stock gears for now.

Ok, so it sounds like I just need some shift rails, a shifter, and an adapter from Marlin. Dove'd 85, I might be able to come get those this weekend if you're available?

Oh, and can I run the stock crossmember temporarily until I can save a little more for a fancy dual case crossmember?

EDIT: Wait, can I take the t-case shifter off the forward shift tranny and install it on the t-case after I change the shift rails (I have a spare tranny with forward shift t-case for a donor)? Are they the same shifters, or do I actually need a shifter from a top shift case?

Yes, same. Only difference might be the bend/angle but that can be changed easily.

You can run the stock crossmember if you keep the cv in the front driveline. If you have too much lift it'll hit like a bitch though.

So, with my luck (and my lift), its gonna hit. Well, it was a little cheaper than I thought for the crossmember, so if I do this, I will get it all. Im still not sure yet though...

marlin has a fancy adapter that is clocked 10* to help your front driveline angle, and front range offroad offers a x-member for a clocked t-case. i think front range even sells just the center section that bolts to the t-case so you can make your own x-member. just a couple options you may want to look into.

pm me if you want those shift rails. i wish i would have just bought a center section and built my own cross member i have the sky x-member with the e-brake and i don't really like the design of the x-member to bulke

Yup the MCO7R10 raises the front output by rotating the rear case upwards 10* which makes the front output and the bottom of the case the same height rather than having the front output lower than the rest of the case.

It actually would help with the driveline clearance if you used a stock crossmember for awhile after you swap to duals. :;
