Ok, so I had originally planned to upgrade my front brakes on my Toyota by using a V6 master, IFS calipers and IFS vented rotors. What ended up happening is I needed new front pads badly, so I figured Id throw those in because they were cheap and I needed to drive the truck. Upon trying to install new pads discovered I had a siezed up caliper. So, I bought some reman calipers and tossed on thinking that I would just run it like that for a while since I couldnt get the rotors in time (through work), and once again, needed to drive the truck. If youre following, the truck now has brand new calipers and pads up front.

A while ago while wheeling, my star lock washer thingy broke the tabs off and the wheel bearing nut loosened, allowing the rotor to slide out and make contact with the caliper, thus grooving and destroying the rotor on one side. So, now I have to replace my rotors too.

Of course, I want to upgrade when I can, and Id really like to get the vented rotors up front, but I was always under the impression that you have to have the IFS calipers to use the vented rotors. However, while browsing Trail-Gears website, I came across a statement which makes me second guess this.

1986 and later pickups and 4Runner feature larger vented rotors from the factory. Earlier 1979-1985 trucks used solid (non vented) rotors up front along with smaller calipers. If your installing a solid front axle on an 86 and later rig you will want to install a set of these vented rotors onto the axle. With these rotors you will be able use your existing larger IFS calipers. Simply unbolt your existing rotors and replace them with these vented rotors. Slight grinding of the rotors backing plate will be needed. Then simply install the IFS calipers right on to the solid axle using the factory bolts.

These rotors can also be used on 85 and older trucks to increase braking effectiveness. Fits 81-85 Solid axles with 8 hole style rotors.

Ive highlited the section in bold. To me, this sounds like you can use the vented rotors with the non-IFS calipers (IE - stock solid axle calipers like I have). So, can anyone confirm if this is the case? Id really like to not have to go with new calipers again since I just bought new ones for the damn thing, so if I can actually use the vented rotors with the solid axle calipers, that would be amazing. If not, that sucks, haha. Thanks in advance everyone!

EDIT: Does it seem to anyone else, that I need to learn to just do things once?

RE-EDIT: Can someone measure the thickness of their IFS rotors for me?

You have to run the ifs caliper with the ifs rotor.....If the reman calipers you purchased are ifs than yes you can run the ifs rotor.

No, theyre the stock solid axle calipers. Have you TRIED running the IFS rotors with the solid axle calipers?

I guess Im looking for more than just "common knowledge" which is the IFS rotors only work with IFS calipers. It sounds to me like they're saying it will work, and Im more looking for someone who has actually tried/done it. Although, Im guessing that theres probably a reason more people dont do.

Im sort of trying to not upset myself too much that I pretty much wasted a bunch of money buying the solid axle calipers, and I might actually be able to run the vented rotors

EDIT: Point of fact... I just looked up the nominal thickness of the 1990 V6 4WD front rotor, and its the same as the nominal thickness of the 1984 22R 4WD rotor, 0.787". Could it be that they fit after all?

Personally i was more than happy with rear discs(full sky kit) and stock solid front rotors. Thats all i gotta say about that.

thats enuf talkabout sheet metal axels:flipoff:

Im running fj60 front rotors and v6 calipers and the rear is stock rotors and calipers and it does the job:D

Well, I just got back from the parts store, and the two rotors definitely are not the same thickness. I dunno why, but the source I have says they are.

Come to think of it, Im not sure how the newer rotors would work anyway! The holes for the wheel studs were smaller, and the offset was wrong too. Im actually somewhat boggled as to how they would even work WITH the IFS calipers.

Anyway, I guess Im just gonna get some more solid axle rotors, throw the rear disc kit on, and call it good.

You HAVE TO run IFS calipers with the fj rotors due to the thickness.. IFS rotors are vented like the FJ rotors....

And the solid axle rotors are solid(.390 thick) where the fj rotors are at least 3/4 thick.

as i said before my stock front brakes and sky rear disc's stopped the holy heck out of my toy on 38.5's at 3600 lbs.

funny. this exact same situation happened to me a couple of months ago with the star washer breaking and spindle nuts coming loose. trashed my rotor on one side, so i know what you're going through. not fun.

This is pretty much what I have determined. I also determined that the dill weed at the parts store showed me the wrong rotors too, since the part numbers he showed me wherent for a Toyota according to the site.

Anyway, the plan for now is to just get the solid axle rotors and run the discs out back.

I'm sure I have a set of solid rotors if interested. They are taking up space
