So, how would a stock 22re Yota w/ 4.88s do with 36 X 12.5 Iroks?

I have 33 X 10.5 ATs w/ 4.10s and it does pretty ok, other than some hills of coarse. But I want to run the 36s w/4.88s so when I do the SBC swap I will be good as far as gearing. Plus, I've heard they are stronger gears than 5.29s.

EDIT:

BTW, it's still a DD.

I ran everything from 3.90's to 4.88's in my old yota with a 350 and th350. It screamed down the road with 33's on it with 4.10's. It screamed down the road with 4.88's and 35's. It was happiest with 38's and 4.10's and 4.88's and 40's

The 22re won't mind the gears too much, not the best but it'll get by. A good friend of mine runs 4.30's and 38's downt eh road with a TIRED re but it works.

I'd leave the gears stock and run lunchbox lockers personally. That way when you do (and you will) blow r&p's its a simple and cheap fix.

I'd love to keep the stock gear for all those reasons, but I just don't know that my RE could take that much abuse. I know it'll turn them, but it's still a DD.

Sorry, I shoulda mentioned that it's still a DD.

I'll go back and correct that....

any toyota motor NEEDS 5.29s even if 31s are used!
put in 5.29s then sell them when doing the v8 swap and tell the buyer you need his old 4.10 diffs back as part of the deal. I just did this and actually came out ahead:cheer:

I ran 33's on stock gearing for a year or two, good thing I had a strong clutch because it hated it. Neighborhood hills were 2nd gear at best. I wouldn't ever do that again.

I know the 2.7 vs 2.4 isn't much so I will add my thought.

I ran my Tacoma on 36 IROKs on the freeway with 4.88s for a year and it did fine.

BIG DIFFERENCE, the 2.7 is way better

the 2.4 needs all the help it can get. I have run 5.29s with 3.0s and 38s for years and still want to use fifth gear:booo: I would run lower if they would hold up. thank god for chevy power.

x2 on this one!!!

best way to go, my dad has 5.29s and 35" BFGs he has a rebuilt 22re that can smoke 'em in 2nd gear... before with the 4.10s and tired 22re it was a pile. But I would agree this is the best thing to do!

5.29's are nicer for road driving. Well they are on most rigs, I dont have much power even with a fresh worked over re. Although the 42" tsl's probably don't help much. :redneck:

I'm running 5.29s on 35x15.50s and it does pretty damn good!! I can pull some hills in 3rd around town! I only drive it to and from the trail or on the trail that its but I couldnt imagie 4.10s:puke: I had 4.10s in my ford with a v8 with 350hp+ that thing did great with 4.10s and 36s but i dont know about the little 4 banger

If you run 410 gears and big tires say 37 or bigger you will break the output shaft on the t-case. I run 488s with 38" tires. Works good for me.

If you are going to spend the coin on gears go with the 529's.........although 36" tires are about the limit for the 529's, in my opinion. If you plan to go bigger than 36's later I would be a little leery of going with the 529's. I have run them for years with 33's no problem. I also have 2 extra sets sitting in the shed so breaking them isn't a huge deal to me.
