Just curious on peoples own opinion.. 85 Toyota 4runner 22re with bfg 35's what gears 4.88 or 5.29 and does anybody have the trail gear, gears in theyre axles? if so how are they holding up??

4.10--stock 28"
4.56--31"
4.88--33"
5.29--35"

That is the way a lot of people look at it with the 5-speed and 22RE combo. Is it a daily driver? Trail rig only? Those ratios are good overall ratios for most driving situations on and off road and are close to factory.

4:88's if its your daily driver....and 5:29's if its a trial rig.....but id rather 5:29 any day though over 4:88's i run 35's and 38's and 39's with 5:29's and love them

I run 4:88's in my Yota axles under my Sami w/ 35" BFG's--It does the job on the road, albeit not quickly--4th gear to maintain 45 mph up a long grade hill; Keep in mind, I'm still runnin the MONSTER 1.3L Suzuki motor!!!:redneck: My 6:1 T-case gears also provide a 20% reduction in hirange, bringin the overall ratio in Hi range somewhere in the 5:10ish #'s....

5.29's for anything over 35". I run 5.29's with 42's with no problems with breakage so far. Although setup makes a big difference.

depends if it is a daily driver then you probably want the 4.88's because 5.29's eat up the MPG i have always ran 5.29's in my toy diffs wish i could go lower....

Im basically wanting to build a wheeler I can drive to and from the trails but eventually it will just be a wheeler only.. Or is the better upgrade duals or t-case gears first?

Duals first hands down... get the cost and work over with now and you'll have better gearing choices and you'll be ready for when you decide to put 4.7's in the rear case... Yes eventually you will end up with them, mark my words... :haha:

Whats the easiest way to deal with the drivelines? Also which dual adapter is better trail gear or marlin and why?

The rear will need to be shortened roughly 6" and thus the front needs to be lengthened the same.

Marlin built an designed the first dual adapter as we know them today. His first modern styled design is still out there being sold by TG and AA. Marlin discontinued the bearing used on the first design (Mco5) as it was only about 3/4" wide with 12 balls in it. It would allow the coupler to "rock" on the splines and wear them out. The next design Mco7 is still sold as its bearing is almost 2" wide with 2 rows of 16 balls each. No more rocking, while Marlin continues to expand and refine TG steals design's and has them made in china. You make the call there..

If you feel you need lower than 529s you need something other than a toyota engine.
I've been running the first design of the duel case adapter for six or seven years with no problems. I wouldn't waste my time trying to get ahold of marlin. He doesn't care about you. Call T.G. and have your parts in three days.
