toyota rear axle service

DEFINITELY not. There are the seals on the end of the axle tube, and you want it mounted so you can mess with them. Then, the bearings and other seals are on the axle shafts that come out anyway with the backing plate and crap, so it wouldn't matter if the housing was mounted or not.

Its often cheaper to buy another axle with a good bearing than to buy new bearings and have to pay to have the old one pressed off and the new one pressed in...just a tip for ya.

pay? whos paying? i got my bearings and seals the other day for $50, borrowed a bearing race and seal driver from a friend, and my dad has a 12 ton press. i think i am set.

Just be careful not to bend the backing plate.

right. got them off, but it was a bit of a bitch. turns out i got the wrong bearings too. $50 bucks my ass. the ones i got were for the front IFS axles.

does anyone know what the OD of the axle should be, where the bearing seats?
