so the story goes right as i was finaly ready to go duals the bearings in in my 80 toyota tranny wher making so much noise i couldnt stand it so i pull'd it and got a g54 off craigslist the guy seid it was good anyways i got it in the truck and the damd thing knocks so now im on the hunt for a w56 top shift but i gotta know what will make a transmision knock? it does it in every gear but goes away if i push in the clutch?

Tranny

I have no idea what'll make the knock other than a bad gear, bearing, or maybe your motor mounts cant take the torque of the dual cases. The entire assembly will rock and knock against the cab, causing the noise.

I have a good L50 for sale if you're looking for a fix. It works great, had it in front of dual cases, and the best part....no bangs or noise! Check out http://nw-wheelers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42740

Damaged input shaft perhaps? Does the rhythm of the knock change only with engine speed? If so, input shaft is a likely point of failure. In my experience, it's rare for bearings to make knocking sounds. I suppose they could if left to fail for long enough. But, you'll probably have much bigger problems by then.
