Ok obviously living here in the NW we have a little moisture, which causes issues with a number of things. One of the issues I see lately, after only a few trips out in the rig are my trail tools rusting. I keep them in a canvas bag drying them after each trip and it is in no way anywhere near being water proof. Some items are kept in ziplock plastic due to thier nature, but that is not an effecient way to pack everything. I have been kicking around the idea of getting new bag/box....something of the sort or lightly coating everything in oil. However the bag I have is new and no one likes oily greasy tools. If I can come out with a different solution that is cheap, aside from buying new I will most likely go that route.

Anyone doing anything creative?

TIA

wd40 is not good for that sort of thing.....wd40 attracts dust and dirt since it's a petrolium base. Just get a small ammo can and us that. Most all cans are water tight. I might even have one you can see if it would work for you.

I went to a scuba shop and picked u a few waterproof gear bags, for spare parts and ujoints and stuff. For my tool boxes, on the top I take a rag and soak in WD40 and lay it over the top rack and then on the bottom I do a rag soaked with WD40 on top and on bottom of the tools in there. if its really nasty outside I slide all my tool boxes and gear into black 5 gallon garabage bags!!

X2 they come in all differant sizes too:awesomework:

Spray a couple rags with some WD40, not soak, just a good heavy spray, and then wrap the tools in the rags. You have lubed tools and rags that'll help clean greasey stuff up and the rags will help keep them from making too much noise.

And yeah, in an ammo box to keep them dry. :D

I would suggest buying better tools...mine never rust and I do nothing to them?

Or cheaper. :redneck: The only thing I've had rust on me are my cheap "Husky" screwdrivers, but their sockets and wrenches etc have held up to my negligence just fine.

This is simple...make your friends bring their tools :awesomework:
:haha: :haha: more than likely I won't have the right tools anyway:redneck:
are you tools getting wet because the water is getting through the canvas?
yep the bag is soaked all the way through, I am also going to relocate it but without having anysort of roof... short of a plastic bag(which is an option) its going to get wet.

I leave the good set in the garage....just for the reason of weather wear.

I went and looked at ammo cans and I just couldn't seem to find one small enough to locate in my rig. I am curious what if any secrets existied to help protect from rust.

What i have done, and i did this for my winch, and my high lift, is just took the same burlap your using, and painted it with some flat black spay paint. It seals it right up... The cover i made for my high lift has worked perfectly. I hadn't used my lift in over 3 years, and its been sitting on my rack, out in the weather the whole time, and it was rust free... Same for my winch... Been on the truck for 20+ years, out in the weather, and i haven't had a single issue... No rust what so ever!

I bet if you looked around a little you could find wome sort of waterproofing spray, or a wax to treat the tool bag you currently have. Might be all it takes.:D
