So, during the Team Trophy Challenge this weekend I broke a front shaft, and most likely a Detroit. In the post-breakage rally in 2wd to finish out the 4th leg of the daytime events before time expired, we had a fairly high speed run to the end. With Corey as my co-pilot, we hauled ass and NAILED a rock or stump on the right side tire. We got out, inspected, didn't see much, and carried on. Throughout the rest of the trail the steering got worse and worse, could hardly turn left. We looked again, didn't see anything.

Anyways, long story short, a post-event inspection revealed this:

I am lucky it didn't break right at the time, let alone the next 20 miles of FS roads we traversed at a fairly high rate of speed. hahaha I'll post pics up of the rest of the breakage as it gets disassembled.

That's a shitty break...I had the same thing happen on Tight Ass years ago.

Just cruising along....hey...where'd the steering go :redneck:

Was that a stock box?

We were damn lucky that didn't break. I think when you put a new box back on it's time to put the hydro assist ram back on too. That might have helped take that impact and not broken that shaft.

Yeah, that was a stock box. I've got a connection for Cryogenic metal treatment... i wonder if while I've got the replacement disassembled if it would be worth getting the shaft Cryo'd.

Broken sector shafts always amaze me...although in single shear....it's a pretty burl piece of steel to break

No doubt. We went from about 20 mph to stop INSTANTLY. We got out and did a quick inspection, and kept on our way. The scary part is the amount of ground we covered at a fairly high rate of speed AFTER the impact.

I went from 20 to a stop instantly last weekend too. The bruises suck but it still steered...hhhhmmmm:haha:
