are you doing an actual "swap" ? or just a factory replacement?> is the 2.0 the same as the one your pulling out? sounds strait-forward.

Make your arms REALLY small is my only suggestion :fawkdancesmiley: I hate working on foriegn four cylinder cars. My arms get stuck EVERYWERE.

Ever tried to pull the intake off a honda ? :puke:

Yeah im just replacing the 2.0 but for some reason the germans like to put the motors sidways unlike my chevys and they have alot of weird special tools for there crap. When i broke my clutch cable i had to have the dealership replace it becsue i needed a special tool and i was off and running a sweet $540 later with only about $30 of that being parts.

Sorry Chris, and you contacted me about tires, not a motor! :fawkdancesmiley::haha:

Just keep track of all the plugs, label them, take LOTS of pictures! you might have to reuse your intake and boot as i recall, or maybe the boot and intake i gave you will work, they should. The swap is pretty easy, start friday night if you can, pulling the motor is easy, and DONT BELIEVE MARCW ABOUT THEM BEING HARD TO WORK ON! This VW is WAY easier than a honda. my 88 honda you couldnt jab a toothpick into the engine bay. the 20L vw motors have a fair amount of room to work on them.

-Pull the motor and trans at the same time also put them back in together. way easier to etup the clutch outside of the car. might think about taking the hood off also.
-Pull the CV's, unbolt the 3 motor mount bolts, diconnect shift linkage, there should be two engine lifting holds on it too! :awesomework: there should be a wire section that can stay on the motor when you pull it then sawp it onto the other motor when it's out. REPLACE THE OIL COOLER GASKET! I told you about that pesky bugger, it's a $3 gasket that will save you lots of oil and headache.

replace any exhaust manifold studs while it's out.

good place for parts:

DUDE! didnt I give you the manual clutch cable?! :eeek:

I dont remember but it happened like a year and a half ago. Good ides on the pics thou and i rememberd the oil gasket thing and i got it:awesomework: Ill look for the exhaust studs thou. Did you have to change the timing belt? Looked kinda funkey with the two holes on the tensioner.

That should be a new timing belt on the motor, but since it's there, you might as well replace it. the tensioner should be new also, you can get a belt tensioner tool that looks like a giant pair of tweezers but has the two prong ends to go into those holes and rotate the tensioner.

Those engines are pretty easy to work on, not like most foreign cars. You will need like a 12pt torx bit for the cv axles, and make sure you have one of those engine levelers on your cherry picker. ALOT easier then hondas :awesomework:

Like Boonie said, label everything. Those Germans liked to use the same plugs for everything.

Oh yeah, and drop it out the bottom with the trans attached, way easier if the front end is still on the car. :awesomework:

Pull it out the top, the motor mounts will get in the way if you go down. (I've done this exact swap :;)

That's why you unbolt the mounts from the motor, not just the mount from the cup. :awesomework: Or just drop the whole sub-frame out. Easiset way is to still just pull the whole front off the car.
