Water Pump question???????

What does the hose that goes from the front of the intake to the water pump do, or what is it for? Here is a pic to know what I am talking about.

Why does it need to bypass and what is bypassing?

daniel, as for why it needs to bypass, when a SB chevy and others don't need to I can't tell you. BB chevies do, and I don't know why that is either. I think it goes from Tstat housing to water pump, and lets a little of the heated water get out of the engine before the tstat opens all the way. I'm stabbing in the dark here. My guess is its like drilling holes in a tstat in a non bypass system.
