I just got back from registering my new trailer and getting a tag for it and found out some good news. Some of you may already know this, but if you are hauling/pulling anything for personal use, you DO NOT have to have a X1 tag. GVW is determined to only be the empty weight of the truck. Other states have to honor this tag law also for vehicles registered in Alabama. . is a copy of the law. The clerk at the courthouse suggested I keep a copy in the glove box for out of state trips.
