Does the housing have to be stripped down to do this or can I weld it on with it all together. Not sure if seals can handle it or what..

theres no seals at the diff.
i would weld it in short sections. to prevent over heating the gear oil, and so as not to warp anything.

drain the oil and weld slow dont burn a huge weld down just weld a little and walk away and weld a little and walk away................

I had my friends weld mine on, full of fluid and big long HOT welds. Sounds like we did it wrong now  it had never even occured to me that we were doing it wrong. :looser: oh well

Just welding on my diff armor on my toyota rear crash. The tg big ones that is.. well going to do front and rear but the front ill do when i rebuild the axle.. Thanks guys I was not sure.. I read something about doing it in shot sections especially on yota axles..

First off, leave the fluid in it. It will help disperse the heat and keep from burning a thin coating of fluid to the inside.

Second, go in like 3 spurts of length on the lower weld, start with a center weld then the outer welds.

Once done drain and fill the fluid

Yeah...the rear axle on mine had a small crack and I welded it up still in the truck, full of fluid and all....hell, I didn't drain the fluid in the Toy rear when I welded up ladder bar mounts on one for a hotrod...
I hope my rig doesn't blow up now....:redneck:

Did mine full of fluid welded the whole thing at once and been beating the crap out of it ever since with no problems.
