Looks like I get to learn how to replace an injection pump on a 24 valve cummins. :(

Got the dead pedal that keeps coming and going in the last couple days, so I checked the codes with the key on/off three times method, and it showed a companion code of P1396... thought that was kind of funny, so I pulled out my scanner and sure enough... P0216 was stored. Damnit.

At least I have most of the cash saved up for it, since I figured it was going to be happening sooner or later.

Anyone who's done one of these pumps, where did you order your replacement from, and is it worth it to get one that's been hopped up a bit (HR-44?).

Jobless: can you explain the difference between the HO and SO pumps to me again? Am I understanding correctly that if I put an HO pump on my SO motor, I will see some extra performance?

ORRRR... should I just trade the thing in for an '03?

it was a mens naughty nurse outfit :fawkdancesmiley:

but the 03 and up dodges are :awesomework: i almost traded my truck in for one last week when bickford was tryin to **** me.

Yeah, it's tempting... just that I've already put work into mine with the Edge and the FASS setup. Plus I'd feel like a big jerk trading in a truck with a bad Inj. pump too.

When it started doing it, I was kicking myself for not getting a 12 valve. :haha:

I wouldnt feel too bad, I traded my old 97 ford into rodland toyota with a almost blown motor, thing was smoking like no tomorow and wasnt running worth a ****, they didnt even test drive it, barely looked at it and offered me 12 for it, i said sold in a heart beat. That was over a year ago. Last i saw, the truck still sits forsale at kompact car corner :haha:

One thing I will mention... I am going to be driving around the next few days at least with the edge on level 0, to see if maybe it's a fluke and the problem is due to the edge... but I'm not crossing my fingers. :(

If you want to get any extra performance out of you pump i would do the HO/SO swap, but i wouldn't buy an HR-44, for the extra money its not worth the chance of you blowing it... The tolerances are so tight already within those things, that the aftermarket changes have had a tendencey not to with stand or keep those tolerances as well... So, stay stock! I believe the best place to buy from is either DDP, or industrial injection, but i think you have to be a vendor to go through industrial injection...

You got an aftermarket fuel pump to replace the lift pump right?

I got my VP44 from Rip at Source Automotive off the NW-Bomber bbs.

You can put an HO pump on the SO motor (I'm thinking that's what mine had when I bought it) and it was worth at least 50-60hp down at the bottom end. The problem is that anyone who sells you an HO pump will want an HO core, they are numbered...unless you eat the core charge.

for some reason I thought you couldn't mix match the two.. But I'm no 24 valve expert... And no, don't go with the hotrod pump.

Brad: I did upgrade the fuel system, I put in the FASS II system, the whole shebang from tank to pump, new lines, no more banjo fittings, etc.

Hmm... I didn't think about the HO core being required... might just stick with the SO pump.

However, I've heard that some places won't take a pump that's had the wire tapped as a core as well... true or false? (I guess it depends on the place I'm buying from).

Some places will not warranty the pump (the one you buy) if you are going to tap it. Others will so long as you tell them up front.

Call Rip, he's good to work with and can fill you in on the details 503-654-9004

Lucky Jeff...I originally heard the same thing about swapping HO in place of SO...they swap right over with no mods/changes required.

The HO pump makes more power but apparently for those guys that build the hell outa their motors they prefer the SO pumps being that they can support a larger amount of fuel delivery than the HO pumps can.

yeup that's definitely true.. if you want more out of the truck.. stick with the SO pump..

And I second what Brad said.... Call Rip!

Well, I'll be calling Rip and DDP this afternoon to see who can set me up with a new pump... this thing just keeps getting worse and worse.

Anybody who's done one of these: do I need any specialty tools to do the job? Any tips to make it easier? I've got an FSM and a pretty good tool selection.

You don't need any special tools... Well the only odd ball thing is a gear puller, for the pump gear... One thing to make sure, is before you pull the gear off, make sure you turn the motor over, and point the key up. If you don't, they have a tendency to fall down into the front gear case/oil pan, then you get to go fishing:mad: Other than that, it's not that bad of a job!

Just a steering wheel puller... If ya get kinda scared I will be home all day tommorow and you can buzz over and do it at my place...

Hmm... that's tempting, but I don't have a pump yet. DDP has them in stock for 1295 + 400 core.

If I paid for one with my CC this afternoon, would anyone be willing to buzz by there and pick it up for me?
