I have an 85 k5 that im going to end up putting 37" tires on and i want to get a winch. my dad thinks that 8000lbs should be good, but the guy at 4 wheel parts said i should get a 12,000lb winch? I was lookin through the 4 wheel parts catalogue and saw that they have a mile marker SL 12000 for $599.99 and you get a free universal mounting kit and winch cover with it? so any advice helps
thanks

a good rule is 1 1/2 times your truck weight for a winch rating, but I'd go with the 12K winch myself. Thats what my F-250 will get eventually.

I'm Currently running a MM 12K winch and while slow it has never failed me.

and that Means. stuck, stuck, stuck, stuck, with the bumper plowing earth and water running in the cab.

an that SOB never let up.

JMHO:cheer:

I like warn products over mile marker. If you run an 8000 through a snatch block you will get 16000lbs pulling force.

Also cuts line speed and adds to the rigging.

The only warn I would run is the 8274 because even if you Snatch block it your still movin out quick

well if you use a snatch block with a 12,000lb winch it would give you 24,000 lbs of pull. but you have to remember you only get the rated pull on the first roll of the drum on the winch. and lose 10% for each row after that.

thats part of the snatch blocks job. To let you pull more cable off the drum so your winch will pull harder. Not to mention changing direction of pull and other trick things! :cheer:
Just remember that the only time a snatch block will double the pulling force is when the cable is connected directly back to the pulling vehicle, or at least using the same angle of pull.

Edwin,
You've started a lot of threads(13 to be exact, with only 33 posts), askin' a lot of questions on how, what, why, but I'm really curious if you have any follow thru with these threads.
Are you ready to buy a winch? If not, why don't you wait until you get to that point, then post up. If you are ready, I've got a WARN 12000 pound used winch for sale. You gots $$$? And I'm not trying to pop your bubble if'n you are new to this, but slow down and learn a little at a time. You don't need to know it all at once to fit in. Hell, I'm just learning this stuff, and I've been doing it for decades.

When you have a heavy pig, the bigger the better. I like Warn winches, but have seen Milemarkers, and Tmaxs do a good job with great reliability.

the reason ive put up so many posts is because yes i am new to this i and i do know that it wont happen over night but im doing the research and getting your guys' opinions on things that i ahve questions on so that i can get my priorities straight and also get the best product for my money is their anything wrong with that? and yes i have followed through i have about $2500 to put into my truck im getting the rebuilt 350 next week then im getting the jegs roll cage and than the winch that way i will be able to pull myself out thatn im going to go for a few runs to see what i should get next?
thanks for all the input
