I just turned 21, am looking to buy a house-not super hard but I'm saving and looking, and want to downsize how much junk I have. I've got a 94 XJ on tons and Krawlers that's my wheeling toy, I'm not going to sell it unless someone offers me good cash for it. I bought a 2010 Altima that I use to drive around town and to work 90% of the time. I bought it from a dealer in town and owe about 6k on it-building credit while paying it off. I bought a 96 F250 7.3 in March from a friend to pull the Jeep around so I didn't have to borrow my grandpa's truck anytime I need to tow or need a truck. I own it outright. The Jeep is not tagged or insured. My insurance is about $220 a month with Nationwide for full coverage on my car and liability on my truck since I drive it less. My car has the same two scratches on it from when I bought it but I cracked the front bumper from when I hit an armored possum one night coming home from work. I'd need to fix that if I were going to trade it in anywhere, but the question I have is whether or not I should try and sell both my car and truck and get one newer truck or should I just keep both and let it be. Last month they all needed work and it really sucked paying to fix 3 vehicles. I like having multiple vehicles to drive if I ever need to, but I'm not sure if it's the best decision. I'm also not sure if DD'ing a diesel truck is the best choice either. By newer truck I mean something like a 99-03 Ferd 7.3, late model 12v or 24v Dodge, and I'm not too interested in a Duracrap. Opinions please!

I went through this last year. i had a jeep tow pig and mustang that i owed on. i ended up selling the mustang and now daily my tow pig. It sucks because its a pig. It runs good but its a 1995 Dodge that needs a lot of love. My .02 sell the car you owe on buy something cheap to drive that you can pay cash on. you may not have the fanciest car or anything but at 21 and buying your own house thats something else.

The jeep is a toy so it's use and up keep is what I consider disposable income the tow rig is paid for and has a good purpose for keeping it The car has money owed on it when, banks make loans for housing one of the big things they look at is debt to income ratio along with credit history and income history so depending on what the payments are on the car and how that affects your monthly take home is the big concern for the bank they look at there risk level and personal assets don't have that much effect on their loan consideration

I'm going to look at this different than most, I would bust ass and pay off that car and keep it to drive. And why I think this is because if you can't pay that car off in 6 months you're prob not in the right shape to buy a house. Houses eat money in one way or another. Only buy one when you are in good shape, and you need something like that car that is dependable and great on gas, an old diesel is neither of those, I'm not knocking it either because I have a 94 f450 that i use for a work truck. Most people never catch on that if you want something bad enough there is always a way to get it. If you got serious about making money you could round up 6 grand pretty easy if your head is right. One way or the other good luck and it's nice to see a younger guy thinking about things like this instead of video games and sitting on their ass.

I've got the money to pay it off right now, but I like to stay liquid and have some doll hairs to invest in other ventures. I buy and part out jeeps every few months and do other things to make pocket change when I'm not at work. I appreciate all the advise.

I just bought my first house 2 years ago at age 26. I put it off for years because I was scared of having a house payment and vehicle payment. I kept findin excuses to not buy a house. Finally got the encouragement from my girlfriend at the time ( now my wife) to go ahead with it. Like stated earlier, if you want something bad enough you can find the money. I sold off some toys to use towards down payment, furniture and appliances (got a good deal on a foreclosure). I had a small truck payment and small RZR payment and was scared to death to add a house payment. After I took the plunge it was easier than I thought. You find all kinds of places that money was pissed away when it wasn't needed. Houses are very expensive to maintain for sure, but so was bein single for a long time too lol. I think you need to look at your income and see where all your money goes. Chances are pretty good that you're gonna need a new car before that house gets paid off so I'd say adjust the amount you're able/willing to spend on a house payment accordingly. Good luck and hopefully you can interpret my ramblings

Ha, I figured that would come up sooner than it did. I'd probably drive one but I'm just not a huge Government Motors kinda guy.

Awesome response. Ford guy here.

Anyway, good for you for taking on debt. Almost everyone who is self made has taken big risks/debt and got there through hard work and determination. That is really all it takes. Pretty simple when you think about it. Keep working hard (for yourself) and everything will work out.

I'd get rid of everything but the crawler and the towrig. Paying insurance and upkeep on multiple vehicles will cost you more than the diesel fuel cost difference over a rice burner.

Having a spare vehicle is nice........UNTIL it spends more time being loaned out helping someone than it does in your own driveway. I've got a spare im bout ready to report stolen :woot:

I've been struggling with this myself. I have waaaay to many cars. I tag and insure about 9 vehicles. That's not including the ones I don't. I've been thinking about unloading my Harley. All its used for anymore is a dust catcher. The only two vehicles I owe on are the wife's car and my rzr. I just don't see the need for 4 motorcycles, 2 rock crawlers, 4 trucks, 3 cars, 3 trailers, a rzr and a boat. Upkeep is killing me but the misses has a little hoarder in her I think. She doesn't want to get rid of anything. **** me. I guess I shouldn't bitch because I am blessed but it's hard to keep batteries and tires on everything.

Have any LTZ Suburbans laying around.....

I think I have some kind of irrational fear having all kinds of vehicles and then they're all broken down and need something. The only stuff my Nissan has needed in 9 months was 2 tires and oil changes, so that's not too bad. It'll need brakes this fall. My truck has needed a vacuum pump, new IDM, oil change, gear oil change, and new tires in only 4 months. My shitbox Jeep hasn't gotten much of anything by way of upgrades since I was done with the axle swap in Feb. It's just needed stuff to keep it running. Radiator, exhaust (needs it again), shop labor to figure out a horrible wiring issue because I didn't have time before a trip to Harlan, gear oil, Trans fittings and fluid, spare tire and wheel, fuel pump, and some little nic nac stuff I'm sure. I'd like to keep everything, but in the instance of me waiting for a new IDM to come in. I diagnosed the issue Thursday, ordered one, and it won't be here until Tuesday. I've had to work since Thursday and that would be 6 days of me not having a vehicle to get me to work, had I not had the Altima. Also assuming this reman IDM works. That's why I was interested in hearing opinions of whether or not I should get rid of both for a newer truck. At least it made since to me, but I haven't compared things like an insurance quote, estimated MPG, fawking ad volorem tax in GA, plus whatever else I run in to. There are a lot of Ford's popping up now that I have mine, or at least it seems that way. I think I could sell mine and break even with everything I have invested in it. The Altima, not so much... It'd probably be best to use it as trade value on a newer truck at a dealer with cash from a truck sale, and then finance a little through my bank again. Just has to be an 07 or newer. But I wanted opinions to see if I should even go and look into that route or just hold what I have and let it be.

I'm still waiting to become a trophy husband so I don't have to work anymore but that's not working either.

The first thing we need to look at is your thought process behind a dodge over a "duracrap"... We get to the bottom of that, rest should fall in place... :woot:
Yep, when I read that statement, I decided it wasn't worth my time to offer any advice to this guy

Know the feeling. I have 3 rock crawlers a 1 ton k5 a beater truck and my truck and the wife's care and she doesn't want me to sell any of them. I am constantly bringing it up and she finds a reason to keep them. It's awesome but weird at the same time.

I personally would never only have one car. It goes down your hosed. Just my 2 cents

It is awesome she isn't bitching about selling ****, but on the other hand I'm the one that has to keep all this **** up. Hell no I wouldn't have only one primary vehicle. A backup is definitely a must. But I would like to see some of that **** turned into useful or used things at some point.

Know the feeling. I am constantly working on something. Seems like all the oil changes and such hit at the same time.
