Wheelin' In The Country

yup. Epa shut em down cuz of runoff, silt, ect.... I heard from one of witc crews. they are hopn for 2-3 months of downtime. They got an assload of trees and grass to plant and over a dozen bridges to build. they didnt approve of the culverts. Epa is givin the owners no slack. IT will kill the small towns around there economically. >:(

Oh man this sucks !! Damn the gov't is coming at fourwheeling like we are skateboarders or something. Seems like any and every angle is being used.

WHEELING IS NOT A CRIME ! :dunno:

I agree that wheeling is not a crime but some of the riding in certain types of creeks and rivers is not a good thing. It can create a lot of erosion problems and all of the silt that fills in is not a good thing at all. We have to be very careful, the offroad community is relatively small and it does not take much to close down an area.

Why are we not doing more on that front as an offroad community to head up the problem ?

I know very little about errosion protection and all that ( I know several folks on here do... Kelly , Heath, Tyler Mc, and so forth ) But I have heard of "silt fence's" and stuff of this nature to control and maintain run off.

I guess I need to educate myself more on the matter cause like I said, I just dont know anything about that. I got a desk job man.. laughing1

I agree Paul, we should be proactive about being conservationist. The image of offroading is beer guzzling rednecks in big mud trucks.

I love to hunt as much as I love to wheel. The hunting community is very much worried about their image and we do everything we can to not draw negative attention to the sport. Sit down sometime and watch a hunting show on The Outdoor Channel, it is very professional. You do not see any beer drinking, cursing or general disregard for nature.

I am not being a hater here but when you see videos posted of these full throttle assualts on hills with mud flying everywhere and trees being run over it does not look very good for the sport. Not to mention the swearing on camera and blatant use of alcohol. Do not think for a minute that the people that are working to close down land are not watching this activity and using it to their advantage. We only have our selves to blame each time a piece of land is closed.

so the video that nolen reviewed was negative for us? :flipoff1:
yep. that's the image. like it or not, that's a lot of the people that wheel too. erosion control on hills? that's what makes the hill good. As far as damming a creek up with a 10" tube outlet (detention pond) so the silt settles in the pool and the water runs off, that's something that's expensive but doable.

January 1, 2004 a law was passed in Texas the band motorized vehicles from driving within 300 yards of creek edges. This effectively wiped out the second best wheeling spot in the state called "The Slabs". People had been wheeling there since my dad was a kid. It was the nicest cleanest place to visit, ride, and picnic. Now it is a trash bid drug hang out. Worst part is in Texas the road ways run through the rivers not over the rivers. The Slabs saw maybe a few 1000 vehicles per year most doing clean up work but just a few miles down the road there is a road that runs through the creek in about 6" of water where 1000 cars may pass a day. You tell me which one does more damage.

I'm pretty selective on what alcohol is in my video.............no drivers carryin, swiggin, etc. last thing I need is to give the greenies more ammo. that bein said, Miles rollin around on a 50 and his bad ass hangin out iwth beer in hand is hillarious and will make the cut. laughing1

It is not just production videos, but videos posted on Youtube as well. Like I said, for things to change, the image itself needs to take a different direction. I guess it just boils down to people being more responsible, not saying that you can't have a good time, just act like you got some damn sense. thumb.gif

They should definately give JTM Silt Fence a call laughing1

yeh, me too that sounds like a good job for me ;D saving the day by getting the parks back open and making money at the same time. loller.gif

J.T.M Silt Fence and Erosion Control

aka Erosion Police molaugh

Your offroad park, EPA freindly super hero hitit

It's not the wheelers, it's the park owners that are the problem. They're aware of what needs to be done, it's not like they've been hiding under a rock. If a park owner sees or hears of a person disrepecting their land, kick 'em out. If they don't have enough money to pay for material or labor to keep the park going, charge more or have a fundraising ride to help out, or an all volunteer weekend to spread grass and put up silt fence etc. The park owners can't just sit back, keep charging money and watch his trails go to ****. If your park gets beat up from a huge ride and you can't fix the damage quickly, shut it down let the grass grow a little and let the mud settle. Every buisness has to have downtime sometime or another. If your a park owner you got to get tough, don't let irresponsibility on your part bring down your park.
I believe most park owners are not making a living off their parks. So if you did have fewer riders because of your strick rules or lack of obstacles atleast your park could still be open.

( rant inspired by Indashop strap thread)

Thank you, thank you. You said it all better than me, and didn't mispell any werds.

In the east where is it all private land that is opened as parks, the owners have a HUGE responsiblity to head off erosion. The EPA has been on farmers for this since the '70s. You cant rape the land and expect zero reprecussions. They should even qualify for grants for erosion managment. They need to check with their local ASC office and get the paperwork. Silt collection ponds, tree planting, seeding bermuda (large root system), terraces, all can be subsidized by the grants if they'll fill out the paperwork.

With the winds of change today, there may be no such thing as offroading in less than 10 years. All because the areas to ride will have been choked out by law. :dunno:
Then it will be kids wheeling construction site. I cant wait to RTI out on a pile of lumber.....
